Started converting an old blower to gas for a 400 I have. Naturally, the manifold is 2x the price of an RB one. I have already procured an aluminum 2x4 offy for the donor. But that will be later. I got the case stripped down and cleaned. Looks pretty smooth. There is a little staining, but in otherwise it appears to be in great shape. The rotors also, although filthy, have nice edges and no gouging. Made sure to label what used to be the top and bottom rotors. I cut the top lip off and started forming the edge to match the other side. It says Anderson Delco Remy. Can’t find anything on that specifically. I also removed the cross braces on the top and bottom. Should be a fun project. I don’t care to buy one already built. I still need to source some new gears. I’ve only been able to track them down via one company. If the GM part I use sticks out of the hood, it’s technically not “in” my mopar 5384E169-49FD-4743-B500-2D6A9D1A0B1E.jpeg 842AE3D1-F72F-4289-B69C-133D118FB1D6.jpeg 5FADECE2-2055-484B-9490-0D3245A71336.jpeg 34CDBCF8-9448-4894-A817-ACF8F6B9233A.jpeg 6B0DCE29-61E8-4F88-B023-C68FC24D28D7.jpeg 30268876-1CDA-4F1A-B6D5-6A38B7353D02.jpeg ED25060B-88DF-4A9C-A6B0-7D4E2A34EF0D.jpeg E5D1B2FE-CF58-497D-A4A3-EC0396FFBEC3.jpeg

Delco-Remy was a division of General Motors. The GMC Roots type of Blower, which this is was rated at number of cylinders and cubic inches per cylinder. 6 cylinder @ 71 cubic inches= 6-71The type were designed for Detroit Diesel Truck engines. I hope you are not really going to try to rebuild this to be functional yourself ? More to it than just assembling parts . Roots is the last name of the brothers who invented the pump. These were originally designed for blast furnaces and to exhaust the gases underground in mine shafts. Here is one source of rebuilder:

I am in fact going to be using this for myself. I have done countless hours of research on the subject and finally decided to tear into it. I have a pretty good idea of what I have to do, as I am not the first guy to do this. I’m not putting it on my high compression 440. But a 400 with a standard deck height and compression ratio, less the steel shim gaskets, and I’m still <8:1. I have a cam with a 110* lobe seperation, I know it’s on the low end a for blower but should be fine for what I am doing. If it doesn’t work, we will find out together! I’ve got a list of parts I need for the conversion. Mainly the gears are what bring the rotors in tolerance for the gasoline conversion. Some folks would shim them, but that is ill advised. I’ll have a parts and price list when I’m all done. The drive pulley system is what I am dreading driving the price up. I’m gonna try and talk to some tractor pull guys and see what I can scrounge up.

I did some more cleaning this morning before work. I’m going to have to plug the oil galleys in the front to seal the case for the gear oil. The rear, I found some bearing plate caps. I’m going to run the part numbers on the seals, and subsequently the bearings. I’m going to run some numbers and see if it is worth sourcing the seals and bearings or buying them with along with the gasket kit. This is just a fun side project for when I don’t feel like working on the car, or want to play and don’t have enough time to accomplish anything. I’m going to try and keep it as low budget as possible without sacrificing any integrity. I plan on using a blower spacer plate and going from there for the manifold 2CF15E15-1DBD-4FB4-8826-9F323DE58934.jpeg CE45EF57-7772-41F3-9068-82ECE1C0C7D0.jpeg AC73F2CE-667C-4EAD-BB14-1285646215F0.jpeg E9644D14-4393-453C-836D-961179CBB1AA.jpeg D0FBC59D-72F4-4991-920C-542B01933656.jpeg 26FC52EA-B48A-43F9-9081-B70E2EF0D2D0.jpeg 2DB829EF-8DEF-4398-99F8-08360AA47688.jpeg F21CE6BD-390C-4B7D-899F-CAB7B196EEF9.jpeg

Thanks! That is way cheaper than what I had planned, an aluminum spacer (or two) 200+124 + tig welding it to the 2x4.
So far, I found gears for 175, rebuild kit for 100(bearings, gaskets, seals for gas conversion). Triple pin kit 30. Looking for front and rear bearing plates that are reasonable. I have found a few options, but since I am building it, I don’t want a companies name on it. I entertained leaving the stock GM ones, but for around 300 for the pair, it gives me peace of mind. I also found a cool chapter on supercharging in my mopar engines book(89) 50E3D370-F1D3-4CB3-8220-337CF87D4A0C.jpeg 7BC44318-ECF6-4639-8B7F-03C53A3118B0.jpeg 71955467-A620-4E91-A246-DB53E9844F27.jpeg

That's cool man! I've done a couple of those through the years. We used to find them on old 6 cylinder gas school busses. They hung off the side of the engine. That's why they had that lip you have to machine off. Lookin good!

Got my gears from Dyers today. Also went to steel supermarket for some aluminum. I only needed a few pieces for in between the 4 barrels. 2” high, 4 1/4” long 3/8” wide. For 10 bucks I got a few lengths of each 3/8” and 1/4”. I told him I was buying a touch extra to practice my TIG welding and he threw in some extra chunks. Last thing I want is any silly vacuum leaks. I’ll have some pictures with it mocked up at some point tomorrow

Gears are thinner and much lighter than the old GM ones. They were used but they sure don’t look it. Very pleased. I got the intake started after some practice. After I got the welding areas clean I put it in front of the torpedo heater for a while to try to get it a little warmer. I got it tacked in place. Once I melt and fill over all my blemishes (hehe), I will have my friend hog out the center at the machine shop and clean it up. I’m going to have him find the low spot and mill it flat so it isn’t pitching forward anymore. The last picture here is my rudimentary photo editing skills to depict what will be missing from the center plenum. Then I can fit my spacer plate that the connects the intake to the blower. 11C8BE1E-5182-40E9-AEC8-B462EB349865.jpeg 95646DB5-7BB2-46F6-A882-D6F4D77D940F.jpeg AA762C30-2A23-4E59-B987-840E2AA32FEF.jpeg F80345D3-6F8D-4124-898D-6558084454CA.jpeg 4BE92E34-45EB-4159-8A51-2E967F7C0A85.jpeg 710E839D-B919-4214-B74B-7635BEABC966.jpeg A7D38EE7-5BA8-4146-B3BF-ED067ED37DD5.jpeg

Why did you need new gears? I see they're narrower, just curious.

My core only came with one. The new gears came with timing shims and hold down bolts also. I’m glad I didn’t see it was missing a gear when i bought it. I might have ran away assuming someone had it apart and gave up. But I think it was a donor. It was pretty oily inside, assuming bad oil seals. Probably just pumping oil into the old diesel, or at least into the exhaust

Don't forget to add the blow off valve while you have everything apart. They are a pain after you put it all together. Looking great so far.

I’m trying to plan it for either what would have been the rear 4bbl or just above it on the spacer plate

How about in the plenum sides you added?

It would look pretty cool there. Would be totally down for that as long as there are no clearance issues. Thanks!

That's where I have mine but it was out of necessity. Can't put it at the back on a small block due to the dizzy. There shouldn't be any clearance issues as it would be below the blower plate and they don't stick out very far.
