Can you translate that for me? I don't know WHAT you're leaning toward, now...my opinion is, you can't beat a turbo slant six in the area
of bang for the buck, with a small block.

Just my opinion based on what I have seen posted here...
 
Well a lot of my local mopar guys are strictly small block, so I've been dragged into doing a stroker 318 (have the .060 over pistons and block fully set up already). Originally I planned on building a slant but was talked out of it because of the cost. Now I feel I want to prove to my people that the little slant they yank out in favor of a v8, has the potential to kick the crap out of any street driven car they have..
 
Rocker this is my first slant build. Trust me when I got the TOAD in Oct I had plans to yank the slant and go big block but with little bit of research I found that the LEANING TOWER OF POWER is a perfect candidate for a turbo and there is a couple guys that are extremely fast and very knowledgeable and have helped me considerable.
Please don't get it twisted thou this build isn't cheap by no means. Yes I'm saving a lot of money doing almost all the work by myself but to take a dismantled 62 valiant into low 11's your going to have to have a fat wallet or no somebody with a ton of parts.
But one thing is for certain I'm having a ball doing it and I'm on track to possibly firing this thing up in less than a month.

I have to agree that the slant block is an ideal boost candidate and likely less $$ to build than a V8.:happy3: The only disadvantage might be the steep gears ya gotta run with a /6.

Turbo slant six's do not need steep grears. They make brutal amounts of torque down low. I ran a 3.23 first...to much gear...ran out of engine. Tried a 2.94, went faster yet but ran out of engine again. Went to a 2.76 and went faster yet. New engine uses a 2.76 and went 122mph in the qtr with a 1.59 60'.

Yah I picked up a 2.94 about two weeks ago and I'm going to probably go down the same road as u and Ryan and get a 2.76 there's a car show swap meet this weekend in coldwater Mich and I'm hoping to possibly pick up some odds and ends

I got the front half of the motor apart and I was going to install the new timing chain and I'm seriously thinking about pulling the camshaft out and sending it into Oregon Camshaft to have them do a regrind who nos I may wake up and get a wild hair up my a.. and pack it up and send it out

THIS IS AT A 1.5 ROCKER ARM RATIO SO IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT A SLANT IS 1.4 LIFT NUMBERS WILL BE LOWER

very close to my cam on the lift and a little bigger on the duration. Should be a runner! My stock arm measured at 1.37:1

Lots of interesing stuff in the current CAR CRAFT on cam design for turbos. Ken Duttwiler is interviewed and has some revolutionary things to say about "new thinking" regarding lobe center separation.

Worth picking up, I think...

Mine is identical except I only have 220/220 duration; same on both valves.

I have another cam that is 220/230 to try after this one is run for a while,,,

Your car should fly, Aaron...

I want to see it run with a 904, for comparison, ultimately....

BILL I picked the mag up today I found it very intetrsting and little confusing
Do u think my camshaft selection is a good fit for what we are trying to accomplish or is my Dura @50 at 230/230 to high should I go more in the lines of 220/220
Please let me no what u think

I plan on sending the camshaft out in the morning

Me, too. You keep confusing ME with Ryan, Tom, Charrlie and Frank.... THEY all have real-world experience.

I DON'T. All I know is what I read.... and, that's not always reliable.

My gut feeling is, these engines can use a little more duration, particularly, on the exhaust valve, but what do ~I~ know? I have never had a /6 motor running... Ask the guys who have fast cars... I am sorry I can't help.

Our installed cam is a 220/220. Still in the box, in the corner, sits an identical lift cam, except it his a 220/230 for experimentation, later on., after we get a baseline established with the 220/220 cam. Ask me again in a year.... LOL! Not much help, am I??? disgust

Was that the article where they said 108 degree lobe centers made the most power in a blown application? And that 114 centers made for a "lazy" engine? It was definitely not what I was expecting to hear

Yah thats the article me and Bill are talking about all the research I've been doing and I get ready to pull the trigger and order my camshaft and now I'm confused all over again
I think ill just let the chips fly and follow the lead of Ryan and Tom

Yeah; that's the one. It's the issue of Car Carft that's on the stands right now.

They interviewed turbo guru Ken Duttweiler, but bear in mind, he works mainly on new, state-of-the-art stuff that has the latest technology. He said that ball bearing turbos had changed the needs of cam design, and the new turbos can spool a lot quicker that the older ones (like I have) and the wide lobe separation we used with the older designs are not needed with the new-generation design of turbos.

So, whan you read that stuff, keep it in context with when it was written, The older turbos may well need the 114-degree lobe separation cams, still...

Bill the reason I like to throw stuff bye u is because u and I are in the same boat but u have had forced induction exp I havent had any, also u are online late at nite like myself please don't short change yourself I've read a ton of your posts and u are more knowledgeable then myself

Well, Aaron. we have advanced to the point that is' easier to list what we have LEFT to do than tell you what we HAD to do...

We are, this week, going to attmpt to hook up the fuel cell, the pump and regulator and carb, after we start the engine and get the cam/lifter interface broke in.

After that, we have to install some re-pop floorboards in front, and obtain some sort of a wiring loom that will only deal with operational wiring... no lights, heater, radio, or any wiring beyond simple fuel pump and ignition needs.

We still have to finish plumbing the cold side of the turbo, and drive it (I love the sound of that!!!) to the body shop.:)

Interior work (seat, carpet, etc) needs attention....

We'll keep you posted.

As slow as we are, your car will probably be running before ours is....:???:

So Shaker do you think 230/230 @50 on the Dur is a good combo or should i try and get it closer to 220/220
I still havent sent the camshaft out i just pulled it yesterday but i did box it up so its ready to ship out.
Thanks please let me no when u are going to run your car ill jump on my bike and come down and check it out
Heck Tom by the middle of the summer the Toad should be on the road!!
