Hey Guys,

I have a 71 Demon that was orignally a Slant 6 car. It has had a late model 360 put in it. I'm wondering what this line on the passener side inner fender went to originally? Not sure why the owner didn't remove it when he put the 360 in? Any ideas appreciated.

it was either the original fuel line from the tank or it was the evap vent line from the tank. Trace it back. if it goes into a small aluminum looking tube on the drivers side of the trunk or goes directly into the top corner of the tank, then just hook up to a non vacuum port in the air cleaner assembly. This is just to draw out the gas fumes from the tank and run through the engine instead of venting to the atmosphere. One of the earliest emission control systems.

I saw that same line with a rubber cap over the end at Saturday nights cruise-in.
It was vapor return from carb bowl vent.

Thanks guys, forgot to mention this is a California car. Don't know if that makes a difference. So, I can remove it and cap it at the tank?

there is supposed to be a rubber line going from that steel line to the valve cover breather..

THAT IS NOT ONLY the vent for the carbon can system, it is ALSO the only vent for the fuel tank. IF you plug it you must provide alternative means to vent the tank In the thread below, the diagram labels this line "fuel tank vent line" The late model caps are not truly "vented." They are known as "pressure vacuum" which means they are essentially a two way relief valve

More, I think the later models, 74, etc

Thanks for the links. This car doesn't appear to have any sort of vent system hooked up. So, if I remove the line, can I just leave the tank up capped and let it vent to the air?

I have a 72 340 Demon that has this vent line from the tank. The car was built in 8/71 so I assume it is an early production that still used the 3 port breather cap. How common is it to see this on a 72?
