hey all i was just wonder what if any is the difference between a regular 727, an A727? and a 727 torqueflight transmission? and which is better for the 440 going in my scamp? shooting for between 500-600HP

You need an A727-B for a big block. Not to be confused with an A727-A (small block) or A-727-G (slant 6). And then there's the AMC and IHC cases which also won't do you much good.

The aluminum cased Mopar automatics came in two basic configurations; A904 and A727. The A904 was smaller, lower capacity unit used primarily behind 6 cylinder and small blocks in passenger cars. The larger A727 was found behind all big blocks, high performance small blocks, and even the slant 6 in heavy duty or truck use.

"Torqueflite" was the trade name the marketing department applied to mopar automatics way back in the 50's. In trucks the same transmission was called a "Loadflite", and AMC called them "Torquecommand" or some such thing.

Nice write up Chief.

Scampy, basicly, a 727 is a 727 no matter what. Theres hi performance versions from the factory, but, not like your think or wish for. Some years have built in heavier durty parts over others, various upgrades for ethier HI-PO engines, truck useage, HD truck useage. Things like that. The differences are very minor, but make the difference in there duties there put to task on.

The 904 also went through these upgrades as well. But since you have a big block, the 904 mention is a mere foot note.

Back to the task at hand....

Have this tranny built to take 600 HP and Lbs. of torque when you bring it in. Just tell'em the engine is making that much and it should be built properly to handle abuse at these levels. This may leed to an overkill build of the trans, but then again, better overkill than sittting on the side of the road.

ok guys thanks! also is there a way to upgrade a /6 727 to BB usage if thats whats behind the slant ive got now? and finally if that is possible is it worth it or would it be the smarter and cheaper way to go to just buy an already BB tranny?

Completely different bellhousing- case bolt pattern

/6 trans. won't bolt up to a big block. /6, small block, and big block trans. are all different bellhousing patters so none will interchange. The internals are basically the same but the cases are different.

correct me if i'm wrong but you can hack the bellhousing and install and "ultrabell" that bolts right to the pump with longer bolts. now i highly doubt he has a 727 behind a slant, and it probably also wouldn't be worth the time and money for an ultrabell...but technically the answer to his question is yes in my opinion.
