904 trans pump question

Update I have finally found what it is on a diagram it is a vent port. Does anyone know if there is a reason to plug it I see some people have just wondering if I should?

It needs to stay open.

In your photo is the red arrow up?

This is the trans in the as mounted orientation. Note the location of the vent hole

Vent goes to the top, usually a small shield covering it.

I had it flipped over to install the valve body when I started filling it came right out the vent hole.

Which is why I never put fluid in the suckers until after it is installed, cuz it just runs out somewhere .........lol.
The clutches get soaked and all else get lubricated, but that is all she gets.
Install it,including the driveshaft and speed-O, fill the convertor, start it up in park , let her run for a half a minute, shift her thru the gears, then top up as may be required.
BTW
AFAIK only the 727s got the shield. I don't remember if any of my passenger-car 904s ever had a shield. Just don't know.
