"Actual Match Race" 1969 440 'Cuda vs 1973 Firebird Formula 'SD-455'

-
Ok. So 20 more HP. You're right. I was wrong. Big whoop. lol

Show me a Pontiac document that raised the HP rating. This I gotta see. Regardless, it was an underpowered luxury hot rod. Too heavy to get out of its own way in stock trim.

Easy 'Triple-R',

You're the one who questioned me.

Never do that again,,,,,,,,,ever.

Now, in 1975 how did I get a 1969 440 'Cuda to hit 12.80's @ 112 MPH
thru 'slightly modified' Stock Exhaust and 3.91 Gears would be a good question.

You were being pulled by a 1968 383 roadrunner?

Couldn't resist:poke::poke:

Hay, that's Frankie's stick! I'm tellin.

Yes, we always used 383 Road Runners for 'Tow Cars'.

That, and to laugh at.......

Question,...,'How do I get my 383 Road Runner to run in the 13's.

Answer.......'Push it off the side of mountain.'

True Story..

Joe-Nip,

A 'Factory Stock '1969 440 'Cuda ~ 'Automatic' and w/3.91 Gears and stock E70 x 14' Tires.

440/375 HP {NHRA re-factored to 356 HP}

'1/4 Mile' Performance = 13.80's @ 103 MPH.

They only came thru with 3.55 {Standard Gears} and 3.91 {Optional}.

Automatic 'only'

Tires ~ E70 x 14" on 14" x 5.5" Rims

1969 Performance Magazines had them running anywhere from;
* Best........... 13.63 @ 104 MPH
* Average......13.98 @ 101 MPH

Other Performance Results

Detroit Press {Performance Test}
* 13.17 @ 108 MPH {w/Kustom Headers ~ 4.30 Gears ~ F70 x 14" Tires}

Joe-Nip,

The Gearlords Racing Club out in Altadena, California tested a new
1969 440 'Cuda in February 1969.

They took it out Lions Drag Strip, and could not get the 440 'Cuda w/3.55 Gears
to hook up with the 'little' E70 x 14" tires.

Even their best Mopar Drivers could not get the 440 to run any quicker
than 13.90's @ 102 MPH, and with every 'Off-The-Line' technique they had up
their sleeves.

Finally they gave up, and popped on a set of Prowler 8.00 x 14" Cheater-Slicks
with 14" x 6" Cragar S/S Chrome Wheels.

They were able to 'smoke' some incredible runs of 13.35's @ 106 MPH with the
28" tall Cheater-Slicks.

The only other up-grades.
* Champion UJ-12Y Spark Plugs
* Re-Curved Single-Point Distributor
* Re-Set Pump-Shots on the Carter AVS Carburetor 750 CFM

This thread reminds me of one our members with a 360 powered '68-'69 Barracuda using a 455 Firechicken as his whipping post.

Seriously, every grudge match he'd beat the Poncho by a good 1.5 on the 1/4 mile.

1973

There were several 455 HP combinations. Remember too, that the 1973 Firebird's
were loaded with accessories and a few slow-down items.
* Power Steering
* Power Brakes
* Air Conditioning
* Air-Pump
* Transverse Muffler

And those long *** doors have got to weigh a ton too. Even the subframes could knock out an elephant.
