I'm looking to get a new cam for my 318 build. i've got 1.88/1.60 valves with a 600cfm holley on it. police interceptor heads. i'll be using the kb 167 pistons for close to zero deck. crank and rods are stock 74 internals. Stock bore. Stock lifters, pushrods, and rockers as well. I want more power and a some chop but nothing too crazy because it'll be a street car. Anyone have any good cam recommendations

These are the questions you have to provide answers for cam selection.

Auto or 4 speed and
Rear gearing
Tire size
Compression ratio
Power or manual brakes
Car weight
What are you planning to do with the car? Drag race, cruze, auto X, etc...

Manual or Auto? If auto do you have a higher stall converter and if so what is it. Gear Ratio? Are the heads built? If so what are the springs set up for or are you willing to change them an possibly top the guides? You will need to do a push rod length check. Are you willing to degree the cam?

Compression ratio
or better yet; actual cylinder pressure with a known cam,
Or best of all, the exact measured compression ratio after assembly.

I'm curious why you would use the stock 1974 bores which are 45 years old. Have you measured them for roundness and taper?
Forget installing stock used lifters on a new cam.
Yur gonna need more money than you think .......... probably a lot more.

The specs on the stock cam are actually pretty good for a streeter with 3.23s and a 2800TC. Lotsa fun right there, especially with a lil more CCP (Cranking Cylinder Pressure.)

I gotta see those Police interceptor heads. :poke:

A guy told me the same thing in the late 70s.
Said he had them on his 68/69 Satellite 318-4bbl. (nice car)
So, you know, they've been around for a long time.
That was the first time I had heard that.

He kept pestering me, to race my GS1000 Suzuki.(78). But I declined. Those were really nice touring bikes. Great Factory saddle. But not nearly enough tire on them....... I loved that bike...... right up until I bought the next one, lol.
Now I can't hardly even buy an ice-cream cone.......

Isky 262 Supercam, #390126.

108 LSA, single pattern. It is veeeeeeeeeeery easy to over-cam an engine & convert it to canine status. Have your stock lifters re-faced.

They did have "police heads" on 1980's 318 4 barrel cop cars.

IIRC they were 360 heads.

All heads are basically the same except the TA/AAR heads and the first series for the 273 with the smaller attaching hardware at the odd angle are divided up into 3 basic categories;

340 big valve (2.02)
360 small valve (1.88)
273/318 smallest valves

The term “Police Intercepter” heads I label as bull **** and no such thing as there no different than any other head in the basic group I outlined above. There is nothing special about these heads in anyway shape or form period! None, zero, nada, zilich!

The label of “Police Intercepter” was on police cars to denote there duty status, what there intended for.

Any police department worth there salt had a mechanic worth having that would super tune every vehicle that rolled through the door to make sure each “Police Intercepter” vehicle would perform at its optimum level.
(Sort of like what our member 318willrun does on his YouTube channel.)

Now that I got my daily dose of peanut gallery out of my system;

Look for RustyRatRod's 318 Hot Rod Bliss thread.

If you are looking at a Lunati Voodoo cam, dont get the 10200701 HFT. Go with the xxx702 or xxx703. If I were to do it again, I would go with the xxx703, especially with the compression you should have and valve size. If I remember right, @72bluNblu is running a xxx704, look for his posts on the subject.

Elwood: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

New lifters no matter what. I wouldn’t run the Lunati 703 with stock valve springs at all. Even the 702 probably shouldn’t be, but depending on your driving habits it probably wouldn’t be terminal. Best solution for either would be to upgrade the valve springs. Stock rockers should be fine for 702, probably ok for the 703 too but on the 318 I built with the 703 I’m not gonna run stock rockers. Pushrods should be measured, stockers are fine if they’re the right length but they may not be, especially if you cut the heads for the right springs.

You’ll need to figure out the compression ratio too, the 167’s should help with that but you’ll want to know. Lunati has compression recommendations for their cams on their website, best to have at least thr minimum they recommend or you’ll make it a dog with too much cam and not enough compression. Gears matter too. I ran my 340 with the 704 in it with 3.55 gears for awhile, Lunati recommended 3.91’s and I now understand why, it didn’t like those 3.55’s on take off.
