So I jumped down off a wall yesterday and immediately got a really bad pain in my back. I went straight to the ground and layyed on my back. It took everything I had to walk to my car which was fifty yards away and drive home. Now I can walk but that's about it. I iced it last night and tried to stretch a bit. Anybody got advice on dealing with this old man crap?
 
See a Doctor!
No two people are exactly alike. What works for one might not work for another. In fact, trying someone else's "cure" could actually do more harm than good.
Don't screw around with it.
 
Ouch! You may have damaged a disc or two. You at least need some x-rays or a MRI to assess the damage. tmm

Agreed 1000%. I have back issues but when the specialist finally figured out the problem it was very different from the norm.
 
It's muscle related I think. Only really hurts now when I bend over without bending my knees. I told my boss and I am going to take it real easy at work. If it's still bad after work I'm heading to the doc.

What they said. Don't make the mistakes I made and am paying for now. If I had went into a Chiropractor or for therapy I might not be in the shape I am in now!
 
Been dealing with back pain since I was 25. My lumbar is degenerating and I fear going under the knife. I do good most of the time but when it flairs up I am sore for a good 5-7 days. I have a kidney belt that I wear when I have bad days.

Does not take much to screw things up. Wife fell on her butt at the USPS years ago. She was attempting to pull over a 6' high cardboard box, a Postal Pak. All of the dumping devices for these things were being used and her boss insisted that the contents of this Pack be thrown into the sorting system NOW. The pack ripped and over she went. Things got ugly quick, starting with a mis-diagnosis. The impact started the infamous fibromyalga. And thanks to her having psoriasis when she was younger the fibro woke up her psoriasis....except it was in the arthritis form. Now she is down right miserable at times. Going for infusions, which screw her up for a few days after it is done.
As we age, especially folks that do not sit behind a desk for a living, we all go thru degenerative disc disease. When it gets bad enough stenosis, narrowing of the nerve passages, develops. This is when the fun really starts....Sorry for the rant....
Hope you heal quickly. Listen to whatever the doc tells you. If you end up with a therapist, listen to him/her and do exactly as you are told. Rushing thru recovery now,for whatever the reason, may cost you big time later on....

"Old man crap" and you're 24?
Take care of your back injury correctly now by seeing a doctor and doing exactly what he says or you'll really be paying for it in another 40 years.
 
You did one of the following: Herniated a disc, bulged a disc, came out of alignment, jammed a vertebrae or facet joint combined.

Here is what a doctor will do... Xray, maybe MRI, tell you to rest it, give you drugs that will make it worse, maybe sign you up for ye olde last ditch choice, the knife, which will make things much worse.

See a chiro, ideally one that takes xrays in house or with xray in hand. IF you take drugs take them at night before bed and use ibuprophen (trade name advil) You can take up to 800mg every 12 hours. If you ice and it doesn't feel better try heat. Make sure you are sleeping with proper posture and have a good bed.

That's a good start.
 
You more then likely compressed some disc's with the impact and pinched a nerve.
It could go away if you take it easy but if not see an Ortho and........
1)x-ray and anti - inflammatory
2)MRI
3) Chiro's actually can help
4) Inversion chairs are awesome and if you know someone that owns one

These are Pilates movement's and help to align the spine and disc's...They work and I know cause I had a history of back problem's originating from getting knocked on my *** in a fight on the ice when I was young.
I've kept them in check by getting rid of the gut and having a tight core and doing these movement's and getting on the inversion when needed.

It may be too early to perform these from the trauma and if you try and it hurts too much...STOP!!!

Movement One:
Lay flat on your back on a flat surface.
Bring your arms straight up forming a 90° angle to your body.
Imagine you are holding a straight pole in your hands.
Now keeping your arms outstretched bring your arms toward your toes picturing in your head each disc going one at a time and aligning themselves. Like flipping pages in a book the key is to gradually role the spine with no jerky movement's.
When you have reached your toes, do the same in reverse slowly letting yourself back down into a prone position.The reverse movement is where the alignment takes place.
Don't forget to breathe when doing this and try to suck your abdomen to the floor.

Movement Two:
Lay on your back and then raise up bringing your knees into your chest and wrap your arms around your knees, you are still on the floor.
You are trying to turn yourself into a ball
You then want to gently rock back and forth picturing your spine and all your disc's and vertebrae going back into the correct position.

If you are agile enough to do these movements they can change your life and I mean in a good way.
 
I just did it again. I was trying to take the top off an ac to work on it. All I did was turn my screw driver and the pain was back. Not as intense as last night but it was bad enough to stop me in my tracks.

yes, yes, yes. Inversion table or boots.

If you don't have access to either the boots are pretty cheap and are the best so long as you can move enough to get into them. If you can't get into them you can use a gantry crane or a chainfall to assist you.
 
I've had a back problem for 6 years now and they still can't pin point the problem ,sitting on the couch for the last 3 weeks now waiting for a appointment again, I hope they can find your problem ,Its almost impossible to find a doctor in the dc area , (I know, there's no spines in dc.) to keep the drs. here

It didn't happen on the job. It seems to be healing nicely. I'm a little slow getting up and down but I can bend over a little farther. I'm hoping it was just a pinched nerve but after having a friend get paralyzed for over a year I take back pain pretty seriously. I may still see a doc.
 
I wrecked my back pulling hemi heads off, with the engine in the cars,.. went thru pyshio,, meds, rest etc, nuthin helped much,, ...

Coupla yrs later, my wife and I went to the Virgin Isles to visit in-laws,, he introduced me to his best friend there,, he was a Chiropractor/Osteopath, whose training in Vietnam was putting dis-jointed soldiers back together,.. he worked on me for about 5 mins on the living room floor,, and I started laughing.. my wife thought he was tickling me,, but in fact, I was laughing cuz the pain had stopped.. Thank-you Dr. Tony Corrigan..(now teaching in England I believe)..

He worked on me a few times while there,, then explained how to get a Chiro at home to "adjust" me..

One of my customers was a Chiro I'd put nitrous on his Vette,, when my back went out again,, it took 2 visits,, and only one visit everytime after that.. Been pain free about 30 yrs.. ( never pulled another Hemi head,, without help...)..

I would never have gone to a "bone-cruncher " at home,, and Doctors often don't recognize them (Chiropractors).. So don't be shy about trying one.. imho..

Inversion table....see a doc first....I have one. Trying to use it every day. Granted, we probably do not suffer from the same troubles....but most every night after I am hanging for 2 minutes or so I can feel things moving around in my back. I normally get a very deep feeling, very painful thump right after the little bit of movement I feel. Can't imagine a doc saying no to using inversion. It does feel pretty damn good.....except in my case I have a pair of 5 month old pups assaulting me.....
 
Forgot...see folks talking about a chiro....assuming you have insurance might want to check to see if any of your covered docs do manipulating....ours does....so it is completely covered by our insurance.....something else to look into is acupuncture & trigger point injections.....have had both done and got some short term relief from them. The chiro I saw in AZ used electrical stimulation with the acupuncture....

I fell off a ladder last Sunday, only 2 steps but at my age my back has hurt for the last week.

I did movement #1 and #2 and right now my back feels much better.
I heard my back pop 4 times doing #1 .

So in number one do I gradually sit up or does my back stay on the ground and just my arms move?

When this happened I was at the climbing gym. The lady working is a yoga instructor and told me to do number two along with a couple other stretches. A lot of people think yoga is queers and such but I have swallowed my pride a few times and I have never regretted doing yoga.
