Does it have a choke? If not and it starts up and idles fine when cold it's DEAD RICH.

I don't know the build or how it's setup, initial timing plays a big part in how well stuff idles.

My Carters are set pretty lean yet still will idle when cold and drives OK. If I lean it out anymore then it is, it still will feel a bit lean when warm and very noticeably when cold. The choke only stays closed for 1 - 2 mins. My Carters have no choke

Yes it could be too rich, you need to jet down till it misses a bit while driving and then go back up 1 or 2 jet sizes.

Good to hear you got 550 miles on it - time to wring it out and kick some butt, lol
