My 68 Dart would not start this morning. I put a 72 340 in it last year. It always starts and runs fine. The last ride was on Sunday, no problems. Normally, I turn the key, it starts, I let go of the key and give it a little gas and it runs at idle fine. This morning, I turn the key, it starts, I let go of the key give it gas and it dies. I tried about ten times. It did the same thing every time. I plan on driving it to Carlisle Saturday morning. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's the ballast resistor in the ignition circuit. They should have one at your local parts store. I carry a spare in the glove box at all times.

Thanks for the reply. I work till 11:00. I'll pick one up on the way home. I keep an ignition box and a coil in the trunk with some tools. I will start carrying an extra ballast resistor.

x2 Sure sounds like a ballast resistor. The engine will continue running as long as you have the key in the crank position. Not good to do but as a test for a few seconds.

I looked at my Summit Racing account. My coil came with a ballast resistor, so I already have one. I'll still pick-up an extra.

You can bypass the ballast resistor briefly. I once used a little piece of hose clamp to connect those 2 female terminals together so to drive the car to the part store.
The coil would eventually over heat and some will spill their oil fill on the intake.

It has electronic ignition. I had the distributor from the 72 340 rebuilt.

            Definitely sounds like your resistor.

Also - people will recommend you upgrade to the chrome/black box below:

            https://m.summitracing.com/parts/dcc-4120534

I personally don't have any experience with either one, but lots of people run the box above with strong results.

            Good luck!

Double check your grounds. Clean and tighten bulk head connections and others as well.

Resistor , it is for the starter on 83 to 93 jeeps(forget what model)it looks the same and has slightly less resistance then ballast resistor , have clients been using it for few years no problem gives close to 10v at coil instead of 9 to 9.5 , also depends on charging system...
