how strong are the early a-bodt auto, transmisSIONS?AND CAN YOU BOLT NEWER LA BLOCKS TO THEM??THANKS FOR ANy ADVISE AS I,M NEW TO THE EARLY "A"s.THANKS

They were A904 automatics. Pre-68 torque converters had different spline counts I think. 65 and earlier had cable shifters and ball & trunion driveshafts.

Most of the standard A904 beef up tricks apply, but a later transmission might be a better starting place. Imperial services makes an adapter shift cable to keep your original shifter.

Not only that but the earier snout/pilot is smaller and would wobble around in the back of the newer style crank.

So what you do is have a converter shop cut and put together the pilot/snout side of an new style converter with the internals/splined hub of the old style.

I did this with my brothers 64 dart when I out a 69' slant to his push button 64' trans, even had it cut to high stall, and it only cost me $175
