Hi,

Clearwater Cylinder Head is selling EQ Magnums with 2.02 intake valves. Does anybody know how these heads respond to this modification? maybe someone has got this setup in his car and can tell me something, maybe some Flownumbers are available. Want to use this heads for a 408 SB.

Does the Valve Springs for standard magnum heads fit?

Thanks in advance,

greetings Michael

2.02s are fine for them. I think the trick is the chevy intake valve at 2.02, because it's longer and you can get more lift out of them. On a 408 they limit the sie of the cam, and have a smallish volume, so they will behave small. The EQ heads are excellent, but a 4" stroke really demands more port volume if you are planning to race it regularly, and mildly wants more volume for all other driving. LA springs will not fit as I understand it, but there are others available that will take lifts up to .550. But a cam in that range, is a very mild cam in a 408.

Hughes engines has valve springs that work on the Magnum heads without mods...PN 1110:

120# @ 1.660" Installed 310# @ .550" Lift
# Installed Height/Pressure: 1.660"--120#
# Pressure @ .450" lift: 280#
# Pressure @ .500" lift: 300#
# Pressure @ .550" lift: 310#
# Coil Bind: .620" lift
# Outer Spring ID/OD: 1.033"/1.440"
# Type of Spring:Single w/ damper

Uses retainer PN 1278.

I am thinking of going with their Whiplash cam and the above are what the recommended for the magnum heads. A lot less spendy than the Mopar Performance route.

Hey Mike. Welcome aboard.
The EQ Magnum heads will be a bit better off if you would not mind doing some porting on them. 408 cubes is a lotta cubes for the port size of the head.

Hughes sells the Iron Ram heads which are EQ Heads. They would be able to help you with springs/retainers etc.

Hughes also has the flow numbers for them on their site. They have the numbers for them with the stock valve size and 2.02 valves.

Thanks for the information.

the car should have very good driveability at the street, will see the strip just for fun few times a year. Also want to have some low end torque, engine speed max. 5500 - 6000 rpm.

I thought about using around 10:1 compression, these heads and a lunati voodoo cam, 60403 or 60404. Air Gap intake, 750 cfm carb, Headers, dual exhaust.

What do you think it´s the better head for an engine like this? I also thought about the EDE-Magnums, what do you think about? Or just an LA-Head, have a set of 360 heads available but dont know what´s better. Maybe i can get a set of X-heads with 2.02 intake valves.

maybe you can give me some input about the best combination, will be very helpful.

greetings Michael

2.02 X heads were good in their day but stock won't come anywhere close to flowing what the 2.02 EQ heads do. My X heads only flowed 210/139 stock. After several hours porting them I got the intakes up to what Hughes rates the 2.02 Magnum EQ's at. The exhaust still doesn't flow as much as the stock EQ's even after porting. But I am an amateur at porting so I'm sure the X heads can do more but it'll cost a bunch to have them done. And you'll pay $500 for a decent set of them used and after having them worked over by a pro you'll have much more in them than a new set of E-brocks so their really not even worth considering but that's JMHO. From what I've read the 2.02 EQ's and the E-brocks are about the same flow and port volume. You would also need to run about 3/4 point more compression if using the E-brocks due to being aluminum so keep that in consideration. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me.

The 60404 Lunati is a great street cam. That's what I have in my 360 now and it runs fantastic. It's plenty torquey so if your building a stroker it's the smallest I'd consider.

I'm in the process of building a mild street/strip 408 and am using the Hughes Magnums which are EQ's that Hughes takes and puts in 2.02 valves and does a performance valve job on. I'm also using a Hughes 4246 Hyd. cam. At 9.8 to 1 compression if I figured right it should be a stump puller that does an easy 450 hp.
