I know this has been beaten to death already but here it goes.

I just picked up my copy of DRAG RACING ACTIOn and sure enought there is an article on engine oils and Zinc.
It states that with a flat tappet cam you MUST have zinc. They even recommend it with a roller cam with higher spring pressures. It also states to mix it with synthetic with a additive like LUCAS ZINC ADDITIVE ( only an example) if you want to run SYN. It is pretty adamant about zinc content and how almost all oils off the shelf including now Rotella contains no zinc any longer. It does say selective oils not recommened for street use ( converter cars) such as VR1 vavoline have Zinc.

My question to FABO members is ...What is a good zinc/phosphorus additive to add to conventional oil and is there a specific oil that is recommended that already has the 1200-1400 ppm of zinc/phosphorus in it? Is this required if you only drive the car 2-3 times a week for 4-5 months out of the year? Share the knowledge everyone....I need it!

additive \\\ lucas break in lube=zinc.
oil \\ vr-1 valvoline racing oil.
I have run my motors with both and had no problems.
I have also run my motors with nothing but wall mart oil.
If your running over 6500 rpm's or have high spring pressures then it's most likely more of a problem, but in a average performance motor i don't really think it matters when the motors already broken in.
I like an oil additive like lucas and marvil mystery oil after the motor has been broken in.
I used lucas zinc additive when i broke in my 318.

I found some stuff that can be brought in locally. Lubriplate Super GPO 10w-30. It has 1100 ppm zinc and is formulated for flat tappet classic high performance engines. I ordered a case today. Pm if interested.

Brad Penn or Valvoline race (not for street use) not the vr1. they both have 1500+ ppm which is whats needed for high spring psi. Napa can order the Valvoline.

I,m running the Brad Penn 20W-50,it,s partial synthetic with zinc additives for antiwear protection for flat tapped or roller type cams.

So where do you get this stuff, do you have to import it from the US or can it be ordered over the counter here in Ontario, Canada?

where did you get this stuff from?

Go to Lubriplate website punch in your postal code and it will give the local distributors. Give one a call and get them to order it for you.

thanks for the info Bill!

I have a friend that is a sales rep for a local oil company (they refine and package oil and oil products) He ran some Brad Penn through his lab and wasn't too impressed. Not much zinc and it contained contaminants including water.
They have racing oils that contain zinc but they are 50wt or 20/50 which is too thick for a normal street engine unless you build it loose and with a big oil pump.
He did mention that they have a 10/30wt. oil for older cars that has zinc and a additive to keep seals soft but they don't have it packaged by the quart. I will keep in touch with him for more info especially the lab reports. Mike

I hope I can talk him in to start packaging the old car oil for us.

thats interesting, keep us updated if he gives you anymore info

that stuff actually looks pretty damn good spaz...what made you go with that stuff? lots of other guys using it? and dont mind me asking, but what kinda cam you running?

That looks good CS. Do you order it online? 10/40 is a good number. I reallu don't want to force 50 wt. or 20/50 Racing through my .0015 clearance motor. LOL

I was turned onto it from a member here or another car forum.
It has more zinc than all the other stuff out there like Joe Gibbs, Brad Penn, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Angelina Jolie Voight....=P~...LOL.

The distrubutor I use is from Tennesse, and spent a half hour talking to me over the phone about this stuff.
He said it's batch mixed, not large manifold mixed so the consistency is always the same.
I've been pretty happy with it, but i must admit of all the oils that I have used I never could get the sticky, tacky oil feeling on my fingers from the checking the oil on the dipstick like I did from using the hughes engine high pressure lubricant.

I was thinking about adding the hughes high pressure additive stuff to this stuff at the next oil change but I'm not sure if I want to mix all the different stuff together as I am not an oil chemists and don't know if it will have any ill effects or not.
I think the main ingredient in the hughes stuff is molybenedum (sp?).

I may do it and just report back in a few-k miles.

Oh, my cam is a solid comp .555 lift .260 duration Blip, blip, blip, blip, blip.

Moly, the same slippery stuff they coat piston rings with. I bought a moly coated fuel pump eccentric. It is good stuff.

I heard theres a big lawsuit going on with Mobil-1,I guess some high dollar racers are pissed.Motor no worky?LOL:glasses9:
