Never have i ever done a head without new intake gaskets.
Its just a bad move. Over 10-30 dollars and a dozen bolts. Do it once, do it right.

Not a good reason to cut corners.
What if it didnt have a noticeabke leak and dumped coolant into crancase? Cost of damage by far outweighs the price of a gasket set.

I feel your pain, working with a bad back sucks.
I was laid up and had to get my 2.2 turbo finished. I used a shop crane to pull and replace head.
Its a horrible job with a sciatica flare up. I do this crap for a living, bad back or not i need to get the work done.

Guys check it out.....see the hole by #8 runner? IT has to be covered by gasket unless its a port for water heating something.....?

<<EDIT>> That hole sure is there, BUT it does not enter water port, its between the bolt hole and the water port window so your gasket just didnt seal it. Its a blind hole with no matching head passage. Just collects dust with a normal gasket.

What was the head from. What number is it. Did it come from a heavy duty truck engine as they have the coolant circulating thru the heads and intake. Let us know the details. If the shop did the work, have them make it right. Kim

You have to assemble it in the proper order and use new gaskets... You can do it right, or do it over...

Trying to cut corners and take the cheap way out can bite you in the @ss...

You get out of it what you put into it...

Get new head and intake gaskets, remove the intake and head, and put it on properly... Install a new head gasket and torque the head bolts, then install the intake with new gaskets and torque that to spec...

Sorry about your back problems, some of us have to deal with that also... I was rear ended by a drunk 18 year old driver back in 1988 doing over 90 mph... I feel your pain...

            Agree...

Thank you so much night dwelling mechanics of the world. Rested up im gonna do this crap again. What i know now is the i may have put that intake gasket backwards. Your right it should have sealed the hole i believe. Yup sciatica sucks. Had my discectomy. If it wasnt so cold this would not be a problem.

Before i knew any better, my brother did this on a 302. I said i dont think you are doing it right. He pretty much told me to piss off. 3 times he changed head gasket thinking it was leaking, but it was intake gasket.
Blew it up on the way to the lake.

I have thrown a big piece of clear plastic over a vehicle and stuck one of those little electric room heaters under there with me before when it was too cold to feel my fingers.
                  Just a thought.

Oooooo ouch. My other dart i had was a slant. I was losing coolant. Now, i will admit i get ahead of myself. My brain doesnt always tick right. But i do have extensive knowledge... and i dont know why i would thought that changing the head gaskets and rad, would not cause an oil pressure loss. I thought i needed a motor rebuild.....bought new motor and installed..... the only problem with the old motor was i hadnt torqued correctly. So sometimes i overthink, sometimes i underthink, and sometimes i just dont know. Im glad you guys are all here to help :thankyou:

I am glad to hear that, though not that you have to do it. But the leak looks to be coming from the back coolant hole past the used gasket.

The problem with the sequence of assembly is that the intake has to settle downward against both heads as it sets in. In the sequence done here, if the head bolts are torqued and the head locked in place and then the intake bolts tightened, they can't 'pull' the head upwards to seal the intake gasket. There might be some magic sequence of torquing the head bolts just a bit, and then torquing the intake bolts, and then going back to the head bolts, but getting that right is iffy.
