Yes, for a proper cleaning the carburetor would have to be removed and disassembled, cleaned and reassembled with new gaskets. It may seem daunting, but it is really not all that difficult. It's just terrifying for someone who has never done it. Watch a bunch of you-tube videos, go to the library and read anything you can get ahold of. Make sure your phone is charged and take a bunch of pictures before you pick up the first tool. Then take pictures at each step as you proceed. Then assemble in reverse order.
A rebuild kit should be available from Holley. Having a friend with you helps. Sometimes they see or remember something you missed. This misadventure you are experiencing is an ideal learning opportunity for you to learn more about your car and what is needed to maintain it.
Have faith in yourself and believe. You can do this.

Oh...believe me..I've watched several.. Technically i don't feel i should have to do any of it because i can guarantee it was all as a result of the accident..and as i was saying..her insurance is claiming 100% at fault.. That makes me Leary of doing anything myself.. If i could find a knowledgeable mechanic to confirm my suspicions then they would pay for it.. Darn it!!!

I missed the part of the insurance, my apologies. Then I agree with you. Unfortunately I do not know anyone in your area to ask for help. So I am back to referring you to 4secondsflat for a referral. Or perhaps if there is a speed shop in town, they might be able to advise you.

Go to a local car show and look for small block Mopars that are stockers [not street rods]. Find one with an old geezer standing next to it. He may have had it for decades and fixed it himself or knows a good mechanic. Then give him a pretty smile, which is easy for you to do. Then flash your tattoo. He'll tell you everything!!!

I don't know what has been changed over the years, but your engine came with a dual point distributor and a carburetor that probably had true idle idle jets. A few pictures of the top of the engine with the air cleaner off would help.

Pull the valve covers and make sure the collision didnt break a rocker or bend a valve or anything like that. I have seen pushrods punch threw the top of the rockers I'm not sure an impact in the rear would cause this but it's a good place to start.

Have you had the underside of the car checked? How does the exhaust system look?

I was thinking of that too. I had a '84 Diplomat squad that somehow went backwards into a deep ditch at 2:30 in the morning on a -5 degree day. Car ran like crap, and I couldn't figure it out.. tune up, etc.. finally crawled underneath and the exhaust had a big kink. Fixed that and it ran great again.

Welcome from Wisconsin, @Beckers3405 ! You've come to the right place! Lots of knowledgeable people on here that like helping others out!

FYI,that one was kinked above the rear end in the bend above the axle. It had pulled away from the exhaust tip, but the tip hadn't moved so I didn't notice it. Run your hand up and around, was hard to see from just crawling underneath and eyeballing it.

Ok..cool..thanks for the info.. I also know that temporarily plugging the exhaust with like a sock or ? Will make the leak or?more noticeable.

Depends on how much you car smokes, lol. Mine didn't have a hole in it, so that wouldn't have helped. Yours might though, so it might work if you can keep it running.
I would use a potato, a little bigger than your exhaust if you want to try plugging it. Grind it right in the tip. Don't ask me why I know that.
I wouldn't do that for long though..your engine won't like it.

I have a second home here
My sister lives down by the tracks (condo on the water just inshore from the tracks
I have an aunt and uncle in Vancouver
          etc
I do not expect any word till tomorrow
          exhaust kink good idea
I had a 53 Ford Business Coupe -no back seat
with one of AK Miller's El Caballo flatheads in t
4 strombergs, evans heads, headers etc T85 3 speed w OD trans
I spun it out on a gravel road backward into a dirt bank
bent the exhaust- ran like crap but not noticeable till I got under it
I asked Ak "does the cam have lots of lift or lots of duration"
He answered "it has lots of lift AND lots of duration"
He ground cams on a DIY converted grinder
I did not ask where he got is masters
I ground a few cams on that "grinder"
Damn Flathead had Lucas Ignition- big mistake Akton
BTW that Ford could eat early FI chevies, so could a 55 Nailhead Buick
quickest thing back then was Les Ritchie's 57 312 Blower Ranchero
even faster when I put dual quads from an "E" motor under the bonnets
Les busted his knuckles shifting the three on the tree into second
and his right rear went up in smoke till we showed him how to load the chassis
Isky E-4 came from here- and some still like it
          RIP Les, AK

May not have a hole in it. As said, just a big kink. First ran into plugged exhaust many, many years ago. Car was towed in that would barely run. Just happened to notice the tailpipe was almost completely plugged with dirt. Owner had backed into a parking place with an embankment behind it. Same result if you have a kink pinching the exhaust closed. In a rear-end hit, over the axle is a good bet but I would check the whole system.
If the exhaust is good and it's running rich just since the accident, maybe have someone "competent" check the float level in the carb. Sounds like the "shop" you took it to knows nothing about older cars. Sad but true these days. Several years before I retired, another tech and I were talking about points & condenser. A young tech walked up, listened for a minute, then asked what were points? :p
