How big of a 4 barrel on a stock 1970 318?

Too much carburetor I don't think so lol my last 318 no wait the 318 before that had the Dual quads on it! No a good 600 Edelbrock 1406 with the electric. Just make sure you put a whole 12 volts to the electric choke! Not the nine volt from the ballast resistor! That's how I got one of my carburetors from a Chevy guy LOL he didn't have a whole 12 volts going to the electric choke. I was over there picking up scrap metal and he got all mad it was still warm and full of gas and running fine on the truck! But that damn choke! I can get it to work he said LOL unbolted it and gave it to me and told me to take it to scrap! It's the back carburetor on my dual quad setup on my Stroker motor right now and it's the one that I use for the choke! With a whole 12 volts...
It's getting late I'm tired I'm done but I'll tell you one thing this new phone I got today it sure does work good on voice command!
I put a 750 double pumper on a slant six once........ I put a Thermoquad on a slant six once. Man, when you floored that TQ on the slant, it was the biggest BWWAAAAAAAAAAA sound you EVER heard :D
 
Just looking to see what people think on this. Have a 70 Dart swinger with a 318 that is bone stock except for dual exhaust and a 1970 340 4 barrel intake. How much carb do you think that engine could take without overfueling?


1st bigger carbs dont equal more fuel.

2nd I agree with everyone around 600 cfm give or take 50 for your car.

3rd generally for a small block 400 + hp = 750 and 350 - hp = 650 . Now in between can go either way. Now under 200 hp you can make an argument for a 550. And for some race only and or big inch 850 +.

What's wrong with an electric choke ?

I'll tell you. First I HATE them. Now for the why.

Go out in a nice crisp mornin and bust it off. Starts nice, real quick and stays runnin. Warms up and the choke knocks off. Everything is right with the world. Lets say you're off work this day (whoo hoo) and you're goin to Lowes to pick somethin up for a home project.

You're in JUST long enough for the CHOKE to cool back off, but the engine is fine. Come back out, bust it off and the choke is on......again, when the engine is warm.

That's why I don't like electric chokes. They work when you don't want or need them to. In fact, this reminds me that I need to go out and put the manual choke cable on my truck. lol

Apparently experiences May differ on this? I've never had that happen more than just maybe having to rekick it down or something and maybe let it high idle for a few seconds but nothing extremely irritating like it stays on for another half hour or something while it's warm.

Could be. Then, it could be the warm climate we have here, too. I just like having more control over it.

You could just put a kill switch on it.

Yeah I was kind of thinking if there was a problem with it that one could just go out and pull the wire LOL but now that you say that, a $2 switch would probably do it?
 
Of course unless I got that backwards that cutting the electricity would give me full choke all the time LOL
 
Up here in cold country I prefer a properly adjusted electric choke. Up here you would have to sit a loooong time for the choke to come back on because the heat radiating from the engine will hold the choke open. I do however run my race cars and summer only cars with the choke turned all of the way open.
 
What happened to the chokes you could adjust? Or were those GM products? You could loosen some screw(s) and turn a black plastic housing and fix it up anyway you wanted (adjust seasonally or for local climate, etc.) I know they were not electric, but that system would be handy on any choke. What am I talking about? A manual choke would solve all of this nonsense forever, right?
 
When its 35 or below mine will stay on a slightly fast idle for about 10-14 miles around town before it actually drops to idle. It will be at 1100 ish until i drive it enough and then drops back down to 850-900 ish. 4speed tho so really doesnt bug me, boy does that 340 love that cool crisp air lol

Id say a 500 cfm would be enough. If you had a eddy intake like a performer rpm and headers id consider maybe going up to the 600. Too big a carb is a issue to look out for, we put a 800 cfm on my 340 when it was on the dyno, didnt like it one bit, put the 650 on it and loved it, ended up getting 400/400 on the dyno

Carter or Edelbrock 500 afb. had 1 on my stock 1969 318 Dart with 360 exhaust manifolds and dual exhaust and a edelbrock streetmaster intake. out dragged a 350 camaro with headers and wide rear tires and chrome valve covers
 
Thanks for all the input everyone. I definitely going with an Edelbrock Thunder Series AVS. Lots of tuning options that way. Sounds like a 650 is the way to go seeing that Edelbrock doesn't list a 600 anymore

that 650 thunder has a good reputation. Performs right from the box. 318 will like it, and so would a 360. Good choice.

I think that's a very smart choice. While it maybe a "little big" it can be tuned easily and will leave you with a good bit of room to grow if you decide to swap engines down the road.
 

Edelbrock carbs= garbage!!!

Get a holley if you want to adjust it every week. Ive had the eddy thunder series avs carb on my 340 for 5 years and only have had to adjust idle speed thats it. The edelbrock is way more street friendlier than the holley

Obviously you DON'T know how to tune one..most people who bad mouth Holleys don't..
