How to sell a used engine?

-
I would take a video of it running if it is still in a car.Pull it out and pull the oil pan off.Take a few pics and pull a few bearing caps off and take a few more pics. But sell as is, the video and pics are just for some peace of mind for you and the buyer....

As I've already stated, it's already out of the car. I priced the entire setup together at $500 because I figured that's what it would take me to replace the parts. I broke it down as $100 for the transmission with the converter, $150 for the intake, $150 for the heads, and $100 for the distributor. I guess if I can't get that for it then I'll keep it and have the parts to complete my 340 later down the road. It's not a big deal if I don't sell it, but I figured if I could help someone else out I could find the parts later. I just wanted some othe opinions on the situation to see if I was out of line or not.

I don't think that is a bad deal for all of the parts they would be getting. But I agree with the others, it's a core and should be sold as such.

Last spring, I bought a "low mileage, full roller MP 300hp crate motor" off of Craigslist for $400. The guy gave me a written guarantee that it was a "kick *** little hot rod motor". When I tore it down, it had a ring ridge that you could trip over, NO ROLLER parts at all, and the aluminum M1 intake had rotted out from the inside!!! Was I upset? Not really, because I knew I was buying a core. Had I been expecting to drop the engine in and go, yes. As it worked out, I parted everything out and kept the 91 roller block for free.

I wouldn't recommend selling the combo as a drop in and go piece. Especially if he is a member here and could possibly come back and turn this into a pissing match.

That's really the way I tried to describe it. Here's what I was told, but I don't trust it and plan on tearing it down. If it is truely as described then it is a bonus to the buyer. If not, then he was prepared for it and no hard feelings. He is a member here but even if he wasn't I would still treat him with the same respect.

Sounds like you should be Ok to me. As long as he's a reasonable person there shouldn't be a problem. You obviously don't want to screw him because you have posted your concerns here.
Good Luck.

A compression test and leak down test should be tops on the to-do list because you stated you were told it was .060 over and if it is down a cyclinder it may need a sleeve to be useful. It could be just wore rings but at .060 its pretty much maxed out already. My 318 in my car sounded great, reved super quick and idled smooth even with the cam with no rattleing at all.So I found a 340 core and was going to use the crank from the 318(along with other parts). To my suprise the mains and incerts were shot to say the least and the crank needed turning badly.Theres was no way I would have thought the crank would have been that bad by the way it sounded.Funny thing,I pulled the heads off prior to the tare down and it didn't have a ring groove, top side looked great also.
So basicly don't assume anything. If you want to know for sure you need to go into it or sell as parts.
BTW that price sounds about right to me but you could get more if you went into it.

Good idea for this thread! I actually need to sell a 318 with a fully ballenced forged bottom end, fresh set of 915 j heads, wieand stealth intake manifold, crane 272 energizer cam, windage tray. It has probably around 500 miles on it since being built, I just went magnum. I literally just pulled it like a week and a half ago. Lol
