So for a newbie, how do I know if Im looking at a 340 or 440? Is there an easy way to tell just by looking at it?

Besides the ID on the block a 340 has the distributor in the back and a 440 has the distributor in the front.

A 273, 318 and a 360 also have the distributor in the back.

383, 400 and the other big blocks have the distributor in the front.

Excellent, so I assume the ID number would have 440 in it? And where is the ID stamped at on the block? Thanks guys!

The smart a55 answer?
A big block is big and a small block is small. Lol
By the way, you will learn a lot on here
:blob:

The ID number is cast into the block on the drivers side. It will contain the engine size as the last 3 numbers before the dash. IE: XXXXXX340-5 or XXXXXX440-1

I'm not sure on the correct amount of numbers the x's represent.

Standing in front of the car, look just below the cyl head on your right.

440 etc has this pad
index.php

You can also tell by the oil filter location. If on the lower driver side front, its a big block. If on the rear passenger...its a smallblock. (in case an extreme novice is looking at a stripped top end with no distributor or intake installed)

Let's expand on this a bit. All "Big" blocks have the distributor in front. There are two major types, known as "B" and "RB." ONLY THE RB engines have the ID pad here as shown. "B" engines have the pad on the pass. side by the water pump

"B" engines are also know as short stroke or low deck engines. These date back to the first 350/361 Chrysler built, and were made also in 383 and 400

"RB" engines are known as long stroke or raised deck, or "Raised Block" (RB). They are substantially the same as the "B" engines except the cylinder deck is higher, and of course longer stroke. Most parts will interchange from the "B" to RB except for the intake manifold, pushrods, and of course crank, pistons, rods.

Small blocks are easy (as a rule) to ID

Look at the front of the block, under the head / deck parting line on the driver side. There will be a big long number there, and the CID will be in the first 4? or so numbers of that string.

The exception is some "crate" or rebuilt engines might have the number "x'd" out

Also there will be casting no's on the side of the block, driver side. This will also show the CID

The later small block magnum engines have different valve covers, vertical intake manifold bolts, but this is complicated by some guys adapting Magnum heads to older engines. If you have such a combo, either the seller "has to know" or you are faced with tearing it down and figuring out what you have.

There are other differences......................LOL
