In over my head

My son helped me get my gas tank off today and looks really good, here are some pictures.

I need some opinions here. Should I remove the undercoating from the tank?
We did not see any rust where it went through or holes?

Now here is the insides pictures. What would be good to use to clean it out, that I can buy at Lowes home improvement?

The sending unit needs help but should be able to clean it?

Judging by the pictures, you have a lot of work ahead of you. For sheet metal, try some southwest salvage yards such as Dessert Valley or Texas Acres. There are some decent northwestern ones as well but I can't recall the names right now. Wildcat auto wrecking might be one of them. You can get that fuel neck grommet and sending unit stuff from Mega Parts. http://www.megapartsusa.com/

Your car is not that bad, mig welder and filler. Toss that tank. A1 has one, get mew sender, 10 to 80 ohms is mopar unit.

I wish I could toss it,but my budget won't allow for a new one.

The insides of that tank will haunt you, unless you have a truck, and washboard dirt roads to bounce it around (bb's and cleaner).
You can do it, it does like intimidating at times. We just got a cherry busted- completley tore down a 69 Charger, and rotissiere job. Not that hard. We have it back together, and can't stop the high fives.

Check with your local radiator shops, most can boil it out and apply a protective coating to the inside.
The last tank I had done cost me $40.00.

I plan to check on prices and it would be a lot easier to do.

Wow that is some serious work being put into that.........it will pay off one day...

Well I and 2 of my sons helped me knock out a lot of bondo here are pictures.

The pictures are in thumbnails, just click on the picture to enlarge it.

Someone tried to pull the dents from the rocker panel using the old method of screws and slide hammer.

Somewhere in their though process they decided to stop trying to pull the dent and filled it with 5 layers of Bondo.

My supervisor checking in on me. His name is king

Here is King making sure my middle son is doing a good job.

Surprisingly most of the driver side was in decent shape except for the wheel house and rear lower quarter panel.

Here is one after the bondo was knocked out and used a 40 grit. You can see it's a combination of a dent and a crease.

Here is where the wheel house starts getting bad.

More of the wheel house ( drivers side.)

Passenger front fender looks ok and should be easy to patch.

Front of the passenger fender ( I hope I can patch this ok)

Lower quarter panel at the door.

Rear Quarter panel or whats is left. It is worse than expercted and did not get a picture of the upper part. There was 9 layers at least if not more I still have to get out.

Well that is where I had to stop for today. I will pick up tomorrow and add more pictures.

Well what a great start to the week.

We spent 4 months on the 69 Charger body, and had to make a bunch of sheetmetal patches, Hang in there. Learning curve is steep. lol.
Learn butt welding( gas mig is best). Jump all over it, to keep warpage down, and you need at least a 3/32" gap, as the weld contracts. and sucks in. Only use Rage filler and icing, from Sherwin Williams, and 3m sandpaper from them; it costs, but we could have saved half the time if we knew the combination. Eastwood( I hate their prices, and never buy epoxy from them) has a sanding block kit, $$, but like hard foam, to stick the self-adhesive 3m on, nice. Harbor freight hammer and dolly (once you figure out what hammer off dolly means, things get better). Ospho, from Ace Hardware, is your friend. Don't let it sit, to form a crust; wipe it on, and wipe it off; no water.
Paint, Sherwin Williams. Etching primer for bare metal(harbor freight mask, and ventilation, that stuff is nasty.) . Their Acme urathane primer/filler. That stuff fills, and sands so good.
I have been there, with my 70 Duster, and we are close to finishing my bud's 69 Charger, ready for paint. Patience, it is slow and a bit///
But the painter came over and ran his hand down the Charger, and said stop sanding, my guys will take it from here, and love it. 5 months on our part. And the painter said Sherwin Williams is all he uses anymore; we primered, and shot the darkest purple(looks black) ourselves, in the trunk, jambs, bay, etc; and cleared it. If you knew what you where doing, with a good gun......
I know I'm pushing S/W here, but do buy the Rage filler. And send more pics; we are here to help fellow Mopar nuts.

Great tips thank you. I am looking at buying a used Clarke Mig welder from a pawn shop next month. I am also going to FL to pick up some parts (not the only reason I am going) I haven't given up on it just money is slow on my end. I will look up SW paint locally.
