Well today the boss cut back our hours from 40 to 36. We always worked 4 hours on Friday so our week will be from Mon to Fri now. He said he is going to try to do the best he can to keep us work. I got a feeling our hours will get cut more than that before it gets better. I'm in construction and it is not booming right now. It's not looking good. I've never seen it like this..ever!

Anyone else feeling the slow down?

went from 7days an begging for a day off to 3days praying there going to work next week

Yeah Ax', I think alot of businesses and industrys are hurting right now more than ever.

I've never seen it this bad before in the car industry as well as most people seem to be cutting back spending all around.

I've been feeling the slowdown for the past year .
It seems as though things have ground to a halt to Me .
Just made it through the last round of layoffs in My Co.
Don't know how much longer we can go on like this...
Luckily I should be in ok shape no matter what happens.
Just try to stay positive we're all going through it.

I just put my techs on 36-hour week. It sucks, but it is better than no job at all. most of them had been putting in 50-60 hours a week.

i work for the road department in cali and their talkin about finding ways to cut us back too. its gettin perty bad everywhere. hopefully things get back on track before to long and they get you guys back to working full time again.

I wonder how many young parents are picking their grandparents, great grandparents brains about things they did during the great depression to keep afloat.

My Wife's Grandmother was telling us about her victory gardens and how she saved everything like paper towels that she would rinse out and hang on the clothes line to dry.

Yeah ... Went from six days a week .... Some 12 hour days to as little as two days a week with an entire week off at Thanksgiving plus an additional week off for Christmas....... Our company just announced they will be closing one of its North American plants next year..... Just sucks anywhere from 1100 to 1500 + jobs lost ........ For those who don't know I work for Cooper Tire....

I have been laid off from two different jobs this year! And one was construction, that led me and the wife to live out of the back of our car for a while. Just when I got a place,my new job laid me off. I hope Obama has some heavy punches to throw at our economy problem!

I just left my job at the dealership I was working at. It was part time, I worked on commission and sat there with nothing to do. I was luck if I made $20 a day.

Were pretty busy at the shop I work at so I just pout the extra hours in there. I hope things pick up for you guys soon.

I know the feeling I own a dump truck and out for 3 weeks now..hope things pick up some where....anybody got work for a truck out there..

The construction industry here has been getting tighter and tighter for the last 2 years. Theres nothing more depressing to me than to see on TV or hear on here about more and more people getting their hours cut or losing their jobs!

My father in law is in construction and has been laid off all but two days a week for the past month. I'll bet he's off all winter pretty soon. Another friend drives a concrete truck and just got laid off (as usual for winter) They are predicting a late comeback next year. Luckily for me I'm still getting OT, but Im still being careful.

I feel for you guys in construction, cause it's really rough out there. My cousin laid off his entire crew (Palm Springs) a couple months ago, when the same time 3 years ago he was swimming in work. The tech field in Silicon Valley hadn't been as hard hit until just recently. A guy I know was part of the 800 who were canned at Adobe today, and AT&T canned 12k! Unreal. Still got my gig, though <crossing fingers>.

Good luck everyone, may your dry spells be very short...

My boss and I was sitting in his truck today and he went a head and told me first before anyone else. He said that he has just a few quotes out and have not heard anything back from them. We "might" have a house to start after the first of the year but that is all. Nothing! My boss is in his late 50s and he has never seen it like this.

I would figure tires would be something still in demand....everyone has to have tires on their vehicles.

I just got done talking to my friend who is a painter. They have already cut their hours also and he said that the boss is fixing to start laying off workers. He is going by the DMV tomorrow to turn in his tag of his truck because he can't afford to keep insurance on it!

For years I have dwelled on what I could get into to get out of construction but I just never "had to". Now would be a good time to go to school and learn a new trade (if I get laid off) but I don't even have a clue in what to take. It seems that most of the country is being affected everywhere as far as jobs. I mean I see UPS, Fedex, mail, Medical care, people still hard at it however.

Well guys and gals,
I am a waitress that used to work 6-7 days a week 8-10 hours a shift... now I work 3-4 days a week with 4 hours a shift if that. Waitress only make $2.13 and hour from the all you can eat buffet restaurant. I used live on my tips that I received from the patrons. If Joe Cool gets laid off, he and Mrs. Cool eat at home. I am looking for another part time job near the house so I don't have to drive to work.

This economy is hurting everyone, including me. :angry7:

And my mom gets on to me for leaving large tips!

I was working the the Financial Services until last Friday. At this time I am working off my remaining vacation followed by several weeks of severance followed by unemployment.

Jobs in the Financial industries are scarce with all the major bank mergers and layoffs. I am hoping something works out before too long.

IMO the world would collapse without nurses and waitresses! And Im NOT saying that to be funny!

I'm a union carpenter , been out west here for almost 4 years couldn't get a vacation, Victoria was the hottest real estate market outside of Dubai now when this building I'm finishing is done in march { maybe april with touch ups } theres no next building to go to , projects all over town are being abandoned and we've already laid off over 200 guys from our company , even the local casino cancelled there hotel build and in my line even if people started buying again tomorrow the buildings would be another year before they need a finish crew so it's gonna get alot rougher before it gets any better - good luck everybody

I guess i'll get some time to enjoy that 60k barracuda out back { assuming gas don't go back through the roof again } thank god for the unemployment insurance system 39 wks of $413 ain't the same as 30 bucks an hour but it should keep me cruisin , since I'm gonna be living in the car anyways eh ! {rent here is insane 800+ for a bach apt ave house price 500k+}

I work in the Auto Industry (Ford in Oakville)I,m working til Dec.15 then we are all(2 shifts)laid off til Jan.19/09.After that it,s 2 weeks on 2 weeks off.And we don,t know for how long.I read that oil is down to $40 a barrel, hope this helps with sales, but i think the damage is already done. We,re not in as bad as shape as G.M and i don,t think Chrysler is either. But we are all hurting.Good Luck to everybody in the new year and hope things pick up for everybody.

I don't know anything about the union but I thought they help thier union workers through rough times or something like that.
