Looking for a good cam and stall convertor recommendations for my 470! I am looking for street manners but lots of grunt at the track. Running 8.5:1 compression with 346 heads. Not looking to be the fastest, but a fun combo! I currently have Lunati 10230703 (.494/.513)(226/234 at 050) with factory rockers, switching to Harland Sharps this winter, due to factory style failure. I want to stick with hydraulic lifters. I would like to hear about good combos you are running!

you must do the math on opening/closing of valves against where the piston in the bore is at . your static c/r is based on bdc to tdc . start removing a c/r build on the valves being unseated , cams can kill that static c/r . or help it run . my grinder will take static c/r into his design .

Exactly. There are guys on this site that are very good with the math. Maybe someone will chime in. 8.5cr is the difficult work around, and it's tough to get street manners and track grunt in the same sentence. A bigger cam will further kill the dcr.

man i gear the car for 5200 rpm , and pull that cam out . think wind speed in the ports , cam lift is not the issue , its duration / overlap that killing your c/r . i'd have the c/r in an idle up to 5000 cam design . like a stump puller . torque monster . fun low maintenance driver that walks away from tire burners .

Ok... I do have sights on some heads that will change my compression to 10.4... still needing some recommendations!

It's been posted many times.

Call a cam grinder and tell them what YOU have, and let them grind it. Just so no one can say they didn't see it...

Racer Brown
Cam Motion
Jones Cams
Controlled Induction
Bullet
Straub
Sig Erson is doing more custom grinds.

Spend some time on the phone.

You stuff will run better.

I would like to know what your cranking compression is.

Lowering the LSA will increase the cranking the cranking compression of that engine, which may be beneficial to you in this case. You may want to go that route. Be mindful of overlap as well.

I can't find an off the shelf cam to recommend at this point.

I agree with Yellow Rose, call a cam grinder. Before you do, find out what the cranking compression is on your engine. That will prove useful. The static compression ratio isn't always the end all be all.

The more information you can provide to them the better.

How do I test for cranking compression?

I wouldn't put a small one in it. I wouldn't put a big one in it. Probably somewhere in between. Maybe medium.

why not run the cam with the new heads , check piston to valve head clearance . need .100 min . before spending the bucks on another . i would think with more c/r you will get pull to 6k or close with your package .

I have checked clearances, I performed a clay test, I have plenty of room! Clearances checked out at 0.2215 and .3003!

The medium+ would do it, I bet.
With the 470, do you think we are out of camshaft, compression or cylinder head? I seem to remember winding a 383 with 8.0:1 compression to 7,800 rpm. It did however have 325 cfm cylinder heads on it.

Well you know, if you wanna twist it that far, maybe bump up to the big or the big+. I don't think I would go as far as the big++ though.

No one knows your cam description nomenclature RRR.

Convert that to 1/2 race, 3/4 race etc and then we will know what you think.

That new stuff is all gibberish to me, but I am old school.

Ok......maybe 3/4 and a half.

Compression be hanged.........you can put any cam you want in it, as long as you have the torque converter and gears to go with it.

Will it run better with more compression? Yep!

But me? First.......I would put some good cylinder heads on it.
