New to mopars and with stupid questions!

Looking over the drivers fender to time, above the 0 mark on timing cover is advancing.

The balancer looks like a new style, there will likely be some small numbers etched in it. Usually the longest scribed line is the "0" mark.

War and Peace is easier to read than some of the stuff in this thread. :)

A/J, this is just wrong. That is the correct timing cover.

Shawn Mac You have the right idea. Advancing, or before top dead center, is up in the pictures. If you'd like, I'll make a video and post how to set ignition timing.
Holee C, you're right, I got it backwards! I will make a note

Shawn Mac Here is the video I made. I forgot to mention in the video to unhook the vacuum advance (and plug it) when you time your car. I don't run a vacuum advance on this car, so that's why I forgot. :) Hope this helps.

Very nice! Thank you for the vid. In regards to the 3 yellow lines, you said it takes you out to 40. If I mark mine like that is that how I can set it at 36 degrees to line up with 0 on the block? Did I word that right? Hope you understand what I'm asking.

Late to the party. You will need a timing light with a advance feature. They are either dial or electronic advance. Some balancers are marked in degrees or you can get a timing tape to mark the balancer.

basically. If I want 36* full advance, I can set the last yellow line at 6* BTC (above the zero) and that should be 36*.

When the factory mark on the harmonic balancer is at 10* BTDC, the first yellow line is at zero. When the first yellow line is at 10* BTDC, the second yellow line is at zero (but i'm at 20* advance), and so on. When the 3rd yellow line is at 10* BTC, that is 40*.

The best info yet! Do I do all this at my idle rpm (750 rpm )?

No. Initial is set at idle. Full advancement will be set by you slowing revving the motor by the carb like I did in the video till the timing marks quit climbing (usually it will be between 3000-3600 rpms. There are springs and weights that control the mechanical advancement in the distributor. This is why cars get there full advancements at different rpm's.

I'll save re-curving a distributor for a different time and place. Just learn the basics of what is initial timing (idle) and full advancement or total timing (rpm differs per car)
