Holee C, you're right, I got it backwards! I will make a noteA/J, this is just wrong. That is the correct timing cover.
Shawn Mac You have the right idea. Advancing, or before top dead center, is up in the pictures. If you'd like, I'll make a video and post how to set ignition timing.
Late to the party. You will need a timing light with a advance feature. They are either dial or electronic advance. Some balancers are marked in degrees or you can get a timing tape to mark the balancer.Very nice! Thank you for the vid. In regards to the 3 yellow lines, you said it takes you out to 40. If I mark mine like that is that how I can set it at 36 degrees to line up with 0 on the block? Did I word that right? Hope you understand what I'm asking.

When the factory mark on the harmonic balancer is at 10* BTDC, the first yellow line is at zero. When the first yellow line is at 10* BTDC, the second yellow line is at zero (but i'm at 20* advance), and so on. When the 3rd yellow line is at 10* BTC, that is 40*.
No. Initial is set at idle. Full advancement will be set by you slowing revving the motor by the carb like I did in the video till the timing marks quit climbing (usually it will be between 3000-3600 rpms. There are springs and weights that control the mechanical advancement in the distributor. This is why cars get there full advancements at different rpm's.The best info yet!
