I recently received my alternator case, screws and fabricated bracket from Leanna at Phoenix Specialty Coatings. I had posted a review of my dealings with her up to that date on an early post called "Happy New Year". Don't ask me why I put there, let's just say I had been drinkin' wine and feelin' fine.

Anyway, for those of you who hadn't seen it, here it is:

I'm waiting on the parts (they're due on the 7th) that Leanna coated for me, so everyone look for an update on her work by the 8th or 9th. So far, her communication has been extrordinary and she strikes me as a very intelligent woman who knows her business very well and is a true professional.

I had sent her a Bosch alternator case and a bracket I had fabricated, the alternator not being the easiest part to coat due to it's intricate shape, many threaded holes and tight tolerances. She had asked all the right questions and I never had to give an instruction twice, which is very confidence inspiring.

Ever see those motorcycle and car shows where they have to scrape excess coating out of bores and tap holes after they get thier parts back? This will not be the case with Leanna's work, nor will you have to deal with some guy with twelve fingers on one hand, a 50 word vocabulary and two teeth. She's the real deal.

OK Leanna, I'm done sucking up. Can you send my parts now please? LOL! JUST KIDDING!

I have not received any greater a deal than anyone else could have had this month, so this a true, non-partial review. Please look for my detailed review in the "Mopar General Discussions" section.

Here's my addendum to the previous review:

I have just finished assembling and installing the alternator and all I can say is WOW! Nice job Leanna! As stated before, no sanding, scraping or tapping was necessary. Everthing came together as quickly as if this was a new housing. This says a lot as this alt was a Bosch with a very complex casting with no less than 13 tapped holes, 6 close clearance screw holes, two non removable studs plus two sealed bearing bores, one with an O-ring groove. This quality of work is no doubt due to her exceptional communication skills, enabling me to explain exactly what I needed and what she could do. This no trouble approach also depends on the customer too. When you get in touch with her, have your homework done and know what it is you want done EXACTLY. Leanna can help you with this, but it probably would benefit you as the customer to think a bit about clearances. No different than going to the machinist.

With that said, the coating quality is excellent and very even. It would definitely been top notch show quality if I had smoothed out some minor scratches and casting flaws in the case and pulley before I sent them out. That's my fault, not Leanna's, and she had even offered to smooth out some parts for me as her and Billy offer this service. This is on a driver truck though, and some times I just have to step back and say "Hey man, I'm not trying to win the Ridler Award" lol! I feel that this alt totally sets off the front of the engine and adds that much more panache to the overall look. This was money very well spent. This sucker just looks so mean with the red block, black heads, red valve covers, black alt and brackets, black PS pump, etc!

Sorry, didn't mean to get off track. :-# Where was I? Oh yeah, Leanna's work. :) The satin black color that I had both case halves and pulley done in was just as shown on the website and as described. Leanna also suggested and I agreed that the front case screws and alt fan would look good in a coating called "blasted steel". This color is just like it sounds. It's a matte silver that sets off the satin black nicely yet does not look unnatural or out of place.

So, in conclusion, I can wholeheartedly recommend Phoenix Specialty Coatings in every way including quality, color, value, customer service, professionalism and as an overal enjoyable experience. My fiance and I are going to start on a new project soon, a 1974 BMW 2002, as well as my Duster, and Leanna's got my business hands down.:thumblef:

I'll have pictures posted tomorrow of the installed alternator, no time tonight!

Congrat's on getting what you wanted. Looking forward to seeing the pics.

Your review speaks volumn's on the work performed by one of our members and vendors. Congrat's Leanna.

Congrat's Leanna and ramcharger!!=D>
Like I have said before , We have the best of the best here.
Thanks for a great write up ramcharger !! Leanna has it going on.
Phoenix Specialty Coatings=A number one service:thumbrig:

Mike,

Thanks for the alternator! I'll have pics up tonight.

Joe

Jack,

Thanks, I just want to give credit where credit is due.

Joe

If you ever spend any time with Leanna on our chat in the evenings, you'll also discover that she has a great sense of humor, too. When she lets her hair down, she's just like one of the boys.

But, I'll promise you, when she gets down to business, it's all business.

I can't wait for the chance to send her some items for my '48 Ford F1 rat rod pickup. Let's all give her as much support as possible, hers is the type of service and attention to detail that we all beg for in business dealings.

Jerry

Awwwwwww c'mon now Ramcharger, 'fess up and tell those boys I really didn't take your last dime to coat your brackets and alternator housing! LOL

Seriously, I'm thrilled that you're happy with the work and look forward to a long business relationship. I can't wait to see how everything ties together under your hood.

In the meantime, here's a couple "before" pictures: One of how it all looked when it arrived here at my shop on December 19, and one of everything when I got it all blasted and ready to mask / coat, just to satisfy the pic hounds for now. I'll let you take care of posting your "after" pictures. I've added your fantastic review and a few of the photos I took to my website Gallery too.

Thank you very much for your kind words and for the opportunity to earn your business. It was an enjoyable experience on my end too ... it seems the more challenging the job, the more I love it! I'm delighted everything met with your satisfaction and went back together easily.

P.S. For the January special and to help you guys and gals get your rides all dressed up and ready for Spring, I've decided to extend the 20% FABO discount on any part that you find under your hood (valve covers, brackets, pulleys, air cleaners, etc.). Be sure to mention you're a FABO member when you call or write!

Looks like the booth of you did some good detailed prep!! =D>
I seen that alternator,
and it sure was not that clean when Ramcharger got.:bball:
Ok Joe .:worthles:

OK, I know I'm late. This has been a 15 hour day for me, 9 at work and 6 on the truck again tonight cleaning up the wiring mess you all will see on the pictures that I took last night. After looking at the pictures, I guess I should have blown the dust off too, lol! What looks like a scratch on the top front is casting flaw that the camera flash brought out. These pictures really don't do her work justice, I'll get more tomorrow. Enjoy!

Hay ramcharger!! Looks darn nice to me too.:thumleft:
I took a sneak peek on leanna's site last night and seen it
and the sweeeet bracket you designed. Congratulations !!!:blob:
A perfect fit and a perfect color for your build you have going on.
Did you say you built the bracket from a shock rod to a fuel pump block off?
To cool dude!! Quadzilla will be liking that move.

Very good quality. Not my color of choice, but very good work. Cudo's Leanna.

Jack

Good morning Jack! Leanna's got 6500 colors to choose from, so the sky's the limit. :)

Thanks Mike and a good morning to you too! I used the aluminum fuel pump block off that I had as a template, drew it out on a piece of scrap 3/16" steel from the old rear bumper and cut it out with a 4 1/2" DeWalt angle grinder. After I cut it out, I just smoothed it out with a bench grinder. I'm still using the original block off plate under the horizontal strut plate although it could easily do double duty with a light milling of the underside (block side).

Yes Mike you are correct, I cut open one of the old Monroe rear shocks and used the shock piston rod as the horizontal strut. It's a very nice, high quality piece of machined round solid stock steel. An old spacer did the trick for the vertical bracket pivot and the vertical bracket was an OE item that I had to cut and splice. All the hardware was left over ARP stainless steel stuff I had laying around.

Total material cost? $0!

Thanks ramcharger and a good morning to you too.
One day I will build one for my next v/8 truck and call
it a Ramjoe :rambo:alternator braket.

Wowwwwww that looks great Joe!!! The colors tie in very nicely with the rest of your engine. I'm sure glad the factory Bosch sticker survived ... I hadn't realized it was going to be so "front and center" when it was installed. (My competition would've had just blasted it into a thousand little pieces ya know LOL.)

One thing is certain: It makes all of your hard work worth it when ya step back and look at what you've accomplished. Very nice!!!!

Had to laugh at Memike's comment on the website about wanting his alternator back now. It makes me proud to have had a hand in this deal. Here's some more pictures from my end (Max [Hurley]* wanted to get in on that last one since his fur matched the job).

* All the cats are named for famous racers/builders or cars. You've seen Sox and Martin, the company mascots on the website; there's also Hoover, SixPak, Grumpy, Demon ... you get the idea.

Give Max a scratch under the chin for me.
And I can't wait to get my valiant and send you my intake.
I don't even own it yet and already picked up tail lights for it.
I called my lawyer to get some updates, and I am waiting on his return call.
I will wait till the car is mine , then pick up a two barrel intake.

Thanks bud! You'll have to come by for the first fire party. OK, maybe it'll be the second fire party. I like to fix all the little stuff before anyone shows up. lol! Good news though, I hooked up the battery last night and turned the key on and had no smoke and everthing worked, lol! Everything is working out as planned.

Leanna: Your kitty's truly a good match, lol! I haven't had a chance to check out your website yet but I'm looking foward to it and reading Mike's comments. Thanks for the compliments and I think the alt matches the fan just right. I'll see if I can get a better pic up tonight.

Ram...just tell me where and when...I will even bring a little something for a celebration toast!

Thanks for clearing that up Leanna...I did not mean to confuse anybody!

Mike, when the time comes and if you're using a Bosch alt and electric fuel pump, I'll make you one for free!

Slanted, I'll let you know. Hopefully it'll be within a couple of months, lol! Thank goodness I used the Crane thick grease break in cam lube.

Wow, almost 500 views on this thread!!!! That sure makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over (... well, maybe not fuzzy -- I do shave!) With temps in the mid-20s or less, it's nice to feel warm though.

Anyway, I wanted to keep you all in the loop about an exciting new development. I've found a powder coating oven manufacturer who's willing to build me a MUCH larger oven for a VERY GOOD price. At 8' x 6' x 4' feet, it's large enough to accommodate all those k-members, leaf springs, rear end housings, transmission cases, exhaust systems, and other big stuff you guys are always asking if I can do.

Keep in mind ovens of this size usually run upwards of $9,000.00, so you can see why it's taking me awhile. But at the current rate of only a few customers a month (if that) ... you see where I'm going with this. I'm like most of you guys -- lucky to pay my bills let alone do anything beyond that.

I've offered specials, discounts, sales and everything else I can think of to entice this wonderful group of motorheads to become new customers. If there's ANYTHING I've missed offering (short of autographed nekkid 8x10 glossies anyway haaaaaa) that you can think of, please pass it along. I'm happy to work with you all and won't refuse any reasonable offer. I KNOW this is an expensive hobby to be a part of, so please rest assured I'll do anything I can to make it easy on you.

I really hate to beg [where's my kneepads???], but this offer on the oven is one I just can't pass up.

Thanks for anything ya'll can toss my way.

Leanna,

Redfastback, Crackedback & I got together yesterday for a late lunch. Your name popped up when we were looking at a customer's car and were commenting on the powder paint finish on the intake manifold and valve covers. We all sincerely agreed that we would love to send a lot of work your way but the shipping costs to and from eats up any benefits of doing so (CA to TN and back is a chunk of change). Also, shipping time for time-sensitive projects sometimes doesn't allow for 8-10 turnarounds (especially through UPS ground) One of the only suggestions I can think of for you is to see if there is any way to streamline shipping costs. This may be impossible with some shipping vendors because you need to be doing a certain volume before they even consider talking to you about discounts but I thought I would through it out there. Good luck.

GTX, you're right about shipping costs being prohibitive, especially with the current price of fuel. Without having a large volume yet, the only discount I've been able to secure has been through FairPriceShipping.com, but it's only on items weighing more than 75 lbs. (Check them out if you have to ship a block, tranny or something heavy.)

I've gone through a few invoices and compiled this list to give you a ballpark idea of what certain parts cost via UPS Ground. You can guesstimate your own charges by area of the country and weight (or get a firm quote through ups.com).

6 Pak Manifold Tennessee to south Louisiana $26.13
Hemi valve covers & timing cover Tennessee to Florida $12.26
Gas pedal and alternator casing Tennessee to Colorado $12.23
4 bbl intake manifold Tennessee to SoCal $18.83
SBC valve covers Tennessee to Iowa $ 8.93
4 bbl intake manifold Tennessee to Indiana $11.23
Ford valve covers Tennessee to Pennsylvania $12.92
Alternator casing & brackets Tennessee to Colorado $12.40

Why Louisiana's box was so expensive is beyond me ... it's not like a six pak weighs than much more than a 4 barrel. Maybe they charge more to go into Hurricane Central nowadays!?!? (You couldn't pay me enough to go back there again either, I know that much LOL)

I appreciate you guys at least discussing my shop as an option, even if you opt to have the work done locally. If your coater is more than a few miles from home, please consider me as an alternative; once you figure in the gas of dropping it off and going to pick it up, that $20 for shipping may not be all that unattractive after all.

And besides, my work is better, I love Mopars and know how to treat your parts right, and I look nicer in a bathing suit. LOL!!!!! :angel13:

ide gladly spend the shipping money for a well done job,,but ide want that pic of you in the bathing suit when i open the returned package,,,wink,wink,,:tongue1:
