Hi Folks

Before I start experimenting, can some tell me if the block gets tapped forward or rearward to correct self steering to the right? I'm getting lazy in my old age I guess.

Thanks FABO

Self centering? Or does it keep turning to the right? It might be that the toe just needs adjusting. If the steering wheel and steering shaft are both off center, the gear box will "hunt" for center driving down the road and cause a drift.

Thanks for the reply. This car is being assembled. Fired it up for the first time......Steering wheel wants to turn right by itself. I know that the block on the top of the box needs to be moved fore or aft to center it. I was taking the easy way out asking which direction to move it since I am usually wrong when I have a 50/50 chance of getting it right on the first attempt.

Ok, the that's not self centering, that's turning. Totally different. ........and honestly, I'm not SURE which way to move the block, BUT I would try it not running and move it a little one way, lock it down and start it and see. .......but DON'T reach through the wheel when you start it. lol

It's not violent at the moment, but it definitely wants to go that way. I set it up out of the car with a drill turning the pump and adjusted it so it didn't move on it's own.....I guess the drill wasn't giving the pump enough to mimic the engine turning it. LOL......I wrote down the effect that the block movement had on this phenomenon.......But I cant find where I wrote it down

Also, if I remember "RIGHT" I believe you move the valve driver's side to passenger's side to adjust it, not front to back. At least I THINK that's right.

What I do is:
Jack the front of the car up and put it on jack stands so the front tires are just off the ground.
Start the car up and loosen the bolts that hold the block on top of the steering box.
Tap the block slightly to the right or left (about 1/16 of an inch at a time).
Snug down the bolts and turn the steering wheel all of the way to the left and right and then turn back to center the wheels.
Then let go of the steering wheel and if the steering moves to one side or the other, adjust again until it stays centered.

I have had good success by doing it this way on several cars and trucks over the years, it just takes a bit of fiddling around to get it right.
I would start by moving the block in the opposite direction that the wheels self turn for starters.

Good luck, and let us know how it worked out for you...

That'll work too, but don't forget the drain pan! lol

This is like the three stooges working on a car. Curly is leaning over the fender, Larry is leaning over the front valance and Moe is reading the directions. Moe says, "loosen the four bolts and move the plate forward a little bit." Larry (at the front of the car) slides the top plate 1/16" forwards (towards him/the front of the car). Curly yells, "Stop, he said move it forward. You moved it to the left."

Finally got it centred but man, this thing is touchy. It doesn't move when centred and the wheels lifted, but if you give the strng. wheel a nudge left or right she goes all the way.
