according to my computer my copy of office is about to expire (real class act of them to retitle it a subscription even though it is a program i own)

anyway, the big box stores want 50 bucks for a whole nother year, but ebay has "authentic" liftetime versions for 3 dollars

can someone explain to me if this is legit or not?

lifetime version is a 10,000 user (eg) corp license that someone has lifted and has distributed via an Email 'key'. I tried one and the laptop "couldnt connect to corp server" but another I knew of worked fine. You can get 'open office' by Apache and it is a reverse engineered (?) open source (free) replacement for Office. It will open and create all the same files. Everyone I know in the education field uses Google Docs.

If you have anyone that you know in College...........that will solve your problem. Most Colleges give their students access to 4/5 to copies (online) of "Office". My Daughter finished College last year and I still managed to get a free copy (this year) through her old College email address. My son was in College for 2 years before that and he also got 4/5 copies free for the whole house!!

What version of Microsoft Office?
Office 2007
Office 2010
Etc.

If you can scare up the "Key" for the proper version then you are Golden . . .
Not sure if your Office came with your new computer and they sold you a 1 year lease on the Key Code ??? Downloaded from online.

I always like to get my own retail version with it's own license key. Lots of times these are for 3 computers also.
Office "Student and Teacher" versions are cheeper too and are also good for up to 3 computers.

On my Linux systems it is included with the Operating System Install known as "Office Writer" like the word documents. Use it all the time. Free and no expiration.

looks like now i have office 365
whatever that means

OK Office 365 comes with the new windows 10 computers, but you still have to go online and buy it and renew it every year.

So it comes down to do you want to give them 50 bucks for another year, or do you want to own your own Student and Teacher 2019 version for $150?

Guessing you have Windows 10 operating system on your computer ?

Office 2007 and Office 2010 work on Windows 10, you can go on ebay and see if you can find either one of those with the install CD and Product Key for way less money than New Versions, and they are good for 3 computers not just 1.

You will need someone with a USB CD Drive to put the cd version onto your newer computer that does not have a CD Drive. All this new technology, they have all kinds of ways that they are boxing a person into the corner so they can take their money.

Along with taking off Office 365 off your computer, also take off that "One Drive" cloud storage software as it is a big security leak that they are putting on peoples new computers.

IIRC, up until "13" is/can be a lifetime license.

Somewhere between 13 and 16 it became a subscription.

365 is a subscription.

All my copies are 13 or older.

10 or older saves files in a different format. Kind of a pain but doable.

10 and older is .doc/.xls, etc

13 and newer are .docx/.xlsx

you can open .doc in 2016/365

but you can't open .docx in '10 and down

both google docs/sheets and open office can do some oddball things if converting between their native format and microsoft.

always double check a converted document in it's native reader

(don't send a google doc to a prospective new employer and assume their copy of office 365 will open it flawlessly)

I tend to save docs in .rtf format (because I often need to read reference docs on servers that don't have office installed)

The format remains native and can be read by all sorts of viewers.

You should already have "wordpad" on a windows computer, and "word" should open an rtf by default

I think I remember a few years ago a microsoft offer to "upgrade" "legacy" versions of office to "365"

what a rip.

how many people got hornshwaggled into trading a lifetime license for a subscription?

Another free option besides "Open Office" is Libre office It ships with some of the Linux distros but you can download it for Winslow. It's free

Yes Libre Office and Apache's Open Office are pretty much the same thing.

Created by Software Engineers donating their time and skills to provide us with Open Source (free) word processing programs as a good alternative to microsoft office products.

I like not having to deal with any license at all with Open Office.

Many thanks to all of those that have made the Open Source Products and donated their time and efforts in doing so.
