Hey i have i TCI streetfighter 727 (ugh...) i would love to put a manual in but i don't really want to cut the floorpan. How hard would it be to install a ratchet shift instead? would i have to change the valvebody?

Just install it; follow the instructions, then drill a hole and some sheet metal screws, your good to go. I have a B&M rachet shifter, it was stupid simple to install.

I want to say put in the new TCI FAST gate shifter, it looks boss and is cheap. :supz:

Ok, I was reading on another forum where they said there are different types of automatic transmissions. They both will accept the ratchet shifter, but the ratchet shift operates the tranny different.

May be they were talking about manual valve bodies and factory slap stick shifters not being compatible. The Slap Stick is a ratchet shifter for the forward gears only. A full ratchet shifter will work with both valve body designs.
tmm

My B&M fits all makes and models; they come with all the wizard bracketry to make it work; and instructions to do so. You can do a google search for the shifter your intrested in, and download the instructions in PDF before you every buy it, to make sure it works for you.

So, say i use a ratchet shifter and shift sooner than the transmission would normally, will the transmission still shift or would it wait until it feels the rpm is correct

It does it's thing quickly, either manual shift or 'D'. Especially with a shift kit, like the TF-2. It will act the same way your column shifts, in regards to shift quality, timing etc. All a Ratchet shift does it move the shifter to the floor and gives you a central pivot to shift on. The rest is a feel and a preference thing.

is there any way to make the transmission only capable of shifting with and when you hit the ratchet

manual valve body....and if or when you install the ratchet shifter you may have to drop the pan and do a little adjusting to make sure that when you shift into a gear that it's fully engaged and not off otherwise you will be between shift points. Each brand is different i run a hurst pro-matic and i had minimal adjusting to do.

Here is the one thing I do not like about ratchet shifters especially with a manual ONLY body, and that is the ONLY situation..........IF you should break the trans, or maybe the rear axle, and should want / need to get to neutral quickly, you obviously cannot do so, especially if you are in low..

With a Cheetah, and a small amount of practice you can overcome this in fact I can get the thing from low to neutral before it can shift from low into 2nd / 3rd gear.

I'm not sure about all shifters, but with my Hurst Pro-matic I can be in neutral in less than a second? Bang, bang, bang. Neutral. Maybe I'm not understanding the problem you're describing?

Check out Griner valve bodies.. The best on the market I think, replaced my cheetah with one and never looked back. As far as neutral goes, with the Griner you can go PRN123N ....
