Remembering Old Gas Stations

When this gas station was built the blue prints came from US. This was the typical gas station building in the 30ies in mid US. From what I know of it was Gulf all the way until mid 80ies when it was closed down due to fuel in the ground!

Remember when I was 15 and stopped by with my Husqvuarna and bought 5 liter gas for usd 1 !! The owner had a superb service. Whe you stopped and wanted gas he did it and when you were waiting he checked your oil and water. Sometimes if he had the time he clened the front window!

There's an old Texaco station in my town that, for once, actually got restored and not torn down. My city is notorious for tearing down stuff that should be restored. We tore down our minor league pro ballpark in 1974, and our Carnegie library in 1972. This, however, was saved, believe it or not.

Old abandon gas and service station. Ran across it while traveling old pieces of Route 66 that were abandon when the interstate 40 came thru. There is a chevy water truck and an old International. Both are roached out.

sorry no pics but I can tell ya this.... when I go to springfield, mo I drive 12 mi of old 66. to Joplin is 45 mi of old rt 66. there are maybe 8-10 or so old rock buildings that were obvious either gas stations and /or garages. most are just the remains, or roof fell in or such. the is a guy that bought out " obsolete ford parts" that was in k c MO. he moved down here, bought what was an old rock house. lives in back and store in front. 100 years over is guy that has an old rock garage he uses for welding? truck resto shop. lots of eat things down this way if someone wanted to be a tourist for days/weeks. drive in movie over in carthage MO still runs during summer! LOl and owned by a member on here even!!!

and yes I love those old garage pics. not sure what the younger crown things of all that. NO 17 in rims and flat tires! LOL tell us guys!!!!

That Sunoco station looks a lot like the one my Dad had when I was growing up. Newest car in the picture looks like about 1952. I think his was built around 1958. I worked there part time starting around 1968.

One of the coolest ever built! This station was built in 1929 on Clinton Highway in Knoxville, Tn by the Nickle brothers - avid aviation enthusiasts. When I was a kid in the 50's, we would drive by it several times a year when going to see my grandparents in Kentucky.

As far as the local reports, it has been preserved.

Very col stuff Tony! You should re-create that store front that your parents are In Front of...get some old barn wood and find some similar signs wether they are originals or repops....then get a pic of you and Thelma posing by it :glasses7:
