Figured this is there place to ask.... What was this compartment used for? It's located under the glove box. What years have this feature?

That's your 2x2x70 air conditioner. 2 vent flaps open, 2 rear window vents open, and 70 mph. Drove many summer road trips like that in my 70 Duter 340.

As others have said that is your passenger side fresh air intake. It takes air from the grill on the cowl. As to years I know 67,68,69 have them, probably up to 76 if I had to guess. My 56 ford pick up had one that opened at the cowl. I suspect that even 30s or 40s cars had them. They went away when integrated AC systems came along and incorporated fress air intakes to the system.

Joeycurl, just curious, where you fit age range wise 20 to 30, 30 to 40, 40 to 50?

I found a 629 Smith & Wesson in the drivers side vent of my '67 Barracuda notch back. The previous owner knew nothing about it, I still have it as my traveling weapon.

My 80 power wagon has one too,its a sliding door. I made an air filter for it. Used to drive a lot of gravel.
