shots from the garage...

Two weeks ago it was my “intention” to maybe take the trek to Vegas for at least Saturdays race…. but alas it’s going to be 112 here and 100ish in Vegas. It’s really too bad they don’t run in the evening up there anymore. It was hot, but at least when the sun went over the mountain it was “doable”….. of course my outdated chassis cert was probably the nail in the coffin for going anyways. I knew Famoso I could get away with it, but my experience in Vegas is that they’d a probably looked. Took advantage of a day off and checked the alignment. Couple quick tweeks and it was race car good-nuf! Brought the caster down to 6 degrees equal (one side was 8) and I pretty much nailed the camber at home after replacing the lower arm heims. Set the toe and I think we’re ready for the California Hot Rod Reunion in October. Got up on the two step behind the shop and I’m fairly confident the two step will behave.

The heat’s been pretty brutal out here too, had a month of 100+ with some mixed in 112/113’s. Finally calmed down some and in the 80/90’s.

So tightening the terminals fixed the two step ya think? I honestly hate electrical problems and been working in the field for 35 years…

What do you set your toe in at? Scrapping stock upper control arms this winter on my 70 Duster, replacing with QA1's. Stock bottoms are still good.

Total toe is .10….. camber -.1….. caster 6.3. I can go as high as 8 degrees with this set up.

Wasn’t having any issues but tore the carb down tonight for a general look see….. guess it’s been awhile might be an understatement. I’ve seen picts of this occurring but it’s a first for me. Luckily I had a pair of AED 50cc pumps and a pack of Superperformance gaskets in the trailer.

12 days and we’ll be at Famoso!! I gotta say I’m kind of excited! I think we have the car sorted out. My wife will be accompanying me for the first time since 2020. She retired as an administrator in the local school district a month ago and finally isn’t tethered to her job wherever we went. She’ll have some big shoes to fill as my right hand man for 25 years will be on vacation. Now I know you can do this gig on your own, but having a friend that knows the routine has been a gift. He knows the car, the routine of setting up, hell I probably haven’t filled the fuel cell or checked the tires in 10 years.
California Hot Rod Reunion….. it’s not as much of a “race” as most bracket deals. No buy backs…. a couple hits Thursday and Friday and R1 on Saturday. It’s your goal to make it past that to race Sunday. But the gasser classes as well as nostalgia funny cars TF dragsters are a blast to watch. It’ll be a fun weekend with my west coast racing family.
Got one cool care package this week. A huge shoutout to Chris Andrews (Andrews Racing Transmissions) for the hats, t’s and support $$. This guy built me one top shelf 904 and has been in my corner since I picked the unit up from him. It’s cool having this kind of support for sure!

The good news: car ran absolutely flawlessly over the weekend. Lights were all over as I’m rusty as hell. Even if I’d stayed out of the red I didn’t see that 1.24. 60 and that .14 in the math. Car was smooth as could be in the shutdown so machining the rotors was the fix there…. Only hiccup besides my leaving abilities was that once again the Racepak was only good for one pass. It’s probably something “I’m” doing but despite trying several things none of the cards would read when I plugged it into the sportsman module. I swear that unit is the biggest reason I’ve shunned technology in my car and kept the ignition system pretty basic with the 6AL.
California Hot Rod Reunion didn’t disappoint. Was a great show all around and the weather was spectacular. Not sure we’ll get out again as we’ve got a pretty busy November. Looks like I’ll go 2024 with ZERO round wins! Not sure that’s ever happened, but it was only our second race.

Car looks great and I'm glad you made it out, fun! Is the '.14' a new best?

Spend a bunch on upgrades the last couple years, got everything on point…… and this post may be near the twilight of its existence. Going to figure out a price on the operation….. we’ve not missed a year of racing since 91. Some were 100s of passes, some only a handful, but we always made it out in some fashion.

There’s racing going on already but I’ll be working this weekend missing all the fun. Backed the car out of the trailer and installed the Racepak. Should have had the laptop ready as I’ll have to configure it to my sensors etc…. We’ve also made a huge turnaround in life plans. Building costs in western SoDak are just as stupid as about anywhere and we decided to stay put in AZ. We’ve used some of our home build savings to gut our current home and make it the way we want…. so I’ve lost some garage space with those projects going on….. that and we’re back in the boat business. If we’re stayin in the heat, we’re using the river for sure! The car will be unloaded this weekend and we’ll start going over things in preparation of Muscle Cars at The Strip in Vegas.

Congrats. I looked into Kingman where you live. Seems like a nice town, near Vegas, cooler in the winter. Pretty hard to beat.
Take some of that bread and drag your car out this way later this year!

BTW… is the gal with you in the pic your daughter?

A high-end race car AND a boat...damn!

She likes her lake/rvr time…. what can I say. We’ve had boats for 20+ years. Just sold our last one two years ago as the move up north was still in our sights and people were still throwing money around. Good time to sell as we’d owned it 18 years and sold it for 5k less than what we paid for it in 2002. The one we just bought is 18 years old, but in great condition…. and she didn’t want another aqua minivan.

Kingman is a neat lil community, and the slightly higher elevation does help some in the temperature department. Pretty decent car culture there also.
….and the sept trek is still on our radar. Since my wife retired back in September she’s “all in” on the road trip. It’d had been a few years since she’d tagged along racing and had fun at Famoso this fall.

Well Muscle Cars at The Strip went pretty good. Out of the box Friday I went .008 and then .055 on the tree on test hits. Worst 60 was 1.31 on the first hit and a stack of 1.24-1.25 slips after that. Air was damn good for Vegas and the crew had the track on point all weekend. Was great hanging out with my central CA friends as well as some Vegas peeps I hadn’t seen in quite a while. Unfortunately the Friday night race my lights went horrid and I mumbled past first round and got blasted second round. Saturday hits more of the same. Sunday R1 (no test hits…. straight into the fire!) I went .020 and covered my opponent. 2nd round the same with an .042…… but despite winning we didn’t make R3 as a suspicious valve train noise arose. Hope to get the car out next week and dig into that. Being we usually stop racing at the end of may, I might just drag Bracket Betty out of the corner and throw her in. Been a few years since we’ve done that. Close to 300 passes on SLO-KID so maybe we’ll freshen her up.
The best part, I was actually excited to be there despite the costs. It’s NOT a cheap hobby….. but we all know that.
No wheelie bars!! I trust the shocks!! (Of course altitude has a calming effect too). That’s as high as she goes these days.
