No wheelie bars!! I trust the shocks!! (Of course altitude has a calming effect too). That’s as high as she goes these days.

how do you have your suspension set up? i think my car will perform close to your car with the W8. i haven't made a pass yet but i'm hoping for 9.10-20's. i do NOT want to buy wheelie bars and it looks like you have your car figured out.

It’s a ladder bar car. I had Strange single adjustables in the front and Afco singles in the back in the wheelie days. My front end only has 3” of travel. After the wheel stand I reached out to my “shock guy” in SoDak and he had Eric Safell at Afco make me some double adjustables for the front. I sent them back once and he revalved them and since then we’ve only touched the wheelie bars on a couple of occasions. If/when I go to Famoso I’ll definitely run them. It’s close to sea level. I still run singles in the rear.

i have brand new single adjustable QA1's on all 4 corners with new springs. ladder bar car as well. i'm not sure how the car is going to launch with the new engine.

Well Muscle Cars at The Strip went pretty good. Out of the box Friday I went .008 and then .055 on the tree on test hits. Worst 60 was 1.31 on the first hit and a stack of 1.24-1.25 slips after that. Air was damn good for Vegas and the crew had the track on point all weekend. Was great hanging out with my central CA friends as well as some Vegas peeps I hadn’t seen in quite a while. Unfortunately the Friday night race my lights went horrid and I mumbled past first round and got blasted second round. Saturday hits more of the same. Sunday R1 (no test hits…. straight into the fire!) I went .020 and covered my opponent. 2nd round the same with an .042…… but despite winning we didn’t make R3 as a suspicious valve train noise arose. Hope to get the car out next week and dig into that. Being we usually stop racing at the end of may, I might just drag Bracket Betty out of the corner and throw her in. Been a few years since we’ve done that. Close to 300 passes on SLO-KID so maybe we’ll freshen her up.
The best part, I was actually excited to be there despite the costs. It’s NOT a cheap hobby….. but we all know that.

Looking good!

Finally got around to looking at the car from MaTS….. found the culprit of the mysterious noise as #7 intake adjuster broke. Everything was in place and absolutely no glitter in the oil up in the head. Not sure “why” this occurred, but I have a few sets of rockers to steal parts from so it’s back together for now. All the valve springs checked out so we’re just waiting for some new valve cover gaskets to arrive. The old MP gaskets were starting to weep some even with the vac pump. Not sure when we’re getting out again…. off-roading season has really overshadowed any racing we do anymore.

Good catch finding that broken adjuster.

Well we made the trek over to Firebird raceway in phoenix the weekend before last. Actually had some “ok” lights and lost in R3 each day. Trick was that I’d either run a 9.21…. Or a mid 9.3. Hadn’t been to a track where we’d get a good serving of tire spin in a long time….. obviously made it a chore trying to dial. Lot of top end driving for sure. Maybe we’ll sneak in another before the extreme heat sets in.

Uhhhg!! I HATE this time of year. Summer is soooo overrated!! Been tinkering with things here and there despite the heat (floor temp in the low 90s). BUT!!! next Sunday we load everything up and prepare to head north!! We’d originally kicked around about making it to Ohio in September, but opted out of that. We’ll spend that money hitting some races out here this fall. California Hot Rod Reunion, Street car super nationals, and maybe a couple others. We’ll be attending Thunder Valley Raceway in eastern SoDak for their 3 day Labor Day weekend race. About a 3200 mile round trip, but should be fun! Watching the weather in case we need to pull the plug for sure….

I’m not sure I’ll ever do this again…. Getting stuff together in prep for racing absolutely SUCKS!! Ground temps are mid 90s….. ambient 113. Actually caught a break last night as the temps were mid 90s and the flaming ball of death that we put up with in the sky 350+ days a year was actually hiding behind some clouds, so that was a great opportunity to load the golf cart and car and everything else we remove for the summer months. We store all our trailer tires inside from June until at least September. That is the way we get more that 2 seasons out of them…. our boat trailer taught us that! Loading the car…… ever had a needle and seat go bad? Well what a great time for that!! I’d had the carb apart cleaning it, and the secondary one was suspect so I swapped it. Of course the front one got jealous and wanted a new one too. Thing is I only had one spare in the trailer, but had ordered a new one and received it from summit last week….. golden rule #1. Get new part, PUT IT WHERE IT BELONGS!! after searching for 20 min i finally found it. Car runs…. It’s in the box…. Weather up north looks acceptable enough for the risk involved….. think we’re ready!

2:45 am….. just unpacked the necessities after our 1500 mile trip back home. Car ran great all weekend and we squeaked out a win in the Mopar class Saturday. Definitely been awhile since I’d had a win. Was a fun time….. gotta get some sleep!

Who is the girl Jay, your daughter?
She quit working one year ago to devote more time to getting the car prepped. I’d say things are working out! she wears retirement well…. I got my girl back!!

Suspenders….. that’s why ordering clothes online sucks. If I ate enough tacos to fill them the car would slow 2 tenths! We’ll back down a size when I wear them out.

Good idea, though big pants might have more air movement.
Is that a filter housing on the carb ?
That's cool too , that car is awesome.

Speaking of tacos, I am excited. We have Jack in the crack moving in to our area in November. I remember those fried tacos from my Navy tech school training days in California. They were tasty with a buzz on late at night heading back to the base

October…. Our “false fall” month has arrived. Been starting to look at a newer trailer. While this 16 year old Cargo Mate has served us well with only a couple structural hiccups, we’d like something a little bigger and taller to accommodate our SxS….. basically a toy hauler capable of hauling a car. The torn shackle (one on other side was cracked) was an interesting deal. We started getting tire wear on the RR and it always ran 10-15 degrees warmer. I’d also damaged a side panel on the left side and found a trailer repair place to have this taken care of. After determining that everything was still square they suspected the rear axle and I made the call to replace it. While it was apart they upsold me the Dexter EZ flex equalizer and wet bolt shackle kit. Ton of miles on the rig and there was definitely some wear on the OE dry set up. Long story short…. and I do mean short, just shy of two years after this repair I was leaving for work and was going to put the tire covers on (got in late the night before) and I could hardly get my hand between the tires on the right side. After some serious research on leaf spring trailers i finally figured it out. They installed the Dexter EZ flex for a 33” axle spread…… our trailer is a 35”. So basically my axles were in a game of tug-o-war with each other. I’m neither a “welder” or a structural engineer, but to be honest for the weight involved those long shackles always kind of bothered me for the weight involved. Welded one new hanger on and I made plates to overlay all of them. So far it’s been doing just fine…..

Funny you should mention looking for a trailer.

I’ve started down the rabbit hole again of trying to determine if I want to get a trailer for my car. I only live 14 miles from Barona drag strip and drive the car there, swap tires, make passes, swap back and head home.

Might start venturing out to other tracks now that the boy is in college which would land me in the trailer buying decision process again. There really isn’t crap out here for used trailers and most of what pops up is either in Arizona or northern California. Then there is the “can I pull a smaller fifth wheel with my CCSB Ram”, what kind of freaklin license is CA going to make me get, what type of axles should I get, etc.?

I’ve noticed, and yet still surprised, every time I do this how many **** design trailers there are out there. Many seem to use the “Hold my beer” style of design criteria and look like they were welded together using coat hanger wire.

So for now I’ll keep perusing Craigslist and Racing Junk hoping something pops up from someone with big bucks upgrading!
