Looking back over my hot rodding history I really haven’t owned that many carbs. Most were probably on the conservative side. I’ve often wondered about stepping up a bit on my current W8 mill, but it would be an expensive experiment. It’s sure responded well to other changes we’ve done on the induction side. Ever go too big?

My experience is anything I have ever had went faster every time I put a bigger carb on.
Just one exception. I had a 1025rs Race Demon that I swapped out for an 1100 dominator from Patrick at pro systems. I used to work with him years ago before he opened his carb shop. He gave me 3 or 4 carbs to try. Ultimately the only one I kept was the dominator. It ran as good as the 1025rs but no better. As I had fooled around quite a bit to try the dominator , I kept it and sold the Demon. Dumbest thing I might have ever done was getting rid of that carb, it was bad ***.
So yea, almost ever time bigger has been better with that one exception.

When I had my 414 stroker built in 2013, Patrick built me a 1050 dominator and lots of people said it was too big. It was just right for that motor and i wished that I hadn't switched to EFI. Patrick knows his stuff!

All depends on your combination I run small blocks in the mid 500 h.p. range , I dyno all my motors before putting them in the car on several occasions we have taken the 750 I run off and tried something bigger like an 850 or 950 both showed little to no gain on the dyno it could just be my combo though

i have never slowed down with a bigger carb. 950 on my 355''. wanted to try a 1050 dominator but switched to methanol.
not sure if it's the same as a carb but i run a single toilet on my 355'' at 1435 cfm and 2 toilets at 2870 cfm on the 414''

Never enough cam!
I might be over carb-ed, but it keeps going faster.

I converted my Dutra built Slant 6 to a 2bbl set-up, and then fitted a Holley 2bbl on it in place of the factory style carb. I tried a 350cfm Holley and then a 500cfm Holley.

The 500cfm version made noticeably more top end power, but lost a huge amount of mid-range torque. I ended up running the 350 cfm Holley and sacrificed the bit of power on the top end for improved street manners and drivability.

jbc426^^^^^ gets it.....
Loosing some midrange power means nothing if you are at the track with an 8 inch race convertor. The car never sees mid range anything. I drive mine on the street too, but primarily just putt around, so same lack of concern regards a slight dip( maybe) in mid range torque as I would have at the track.
For a primarily street car, yea. A smaller carb might be more practical.

Right from the rip the OP said this: "I’ve often wondered about stepping up a bit on my current W8 mill..." Do you think he's worried about mid range or part throttle? You think he's runnin a W8 motor in a cars and coffee car?

Exactly lol

Lots of racers drive their car to the track. Just Mopar Joe has done a video on a 426 Hemi, using an 850 carb, then a 950. The 850 carb made more tq & hp throughout the whole rpm range. The 850 made 645 hp @ 6800 rpm. There are plenty of examples of smaller carbs outperforming bigger carbs. Above is just one. Bigger is not always better.

Not surprising. I consider an 850 a bigger carb than an hp950
Has bigger Venturi generally.

Did he try a 1050 or an 1150? If not, his comparison was a bad one. As mentioned above, the 850 generally has bigger venturi. The 950s usually only flow about 830 or so.

Jay, what size carb do you currently run?

Funny thing about a Hemi, my dads stock iron headed 426 hemi that is only .020 over ran the best with my AED 1150 dominator. Going from his holley 1050 dominator to my AED 1150 dominator, the car picked up 1 tenth when we did a back to back switch. Also we shifted the iron motor at 7,000-7,200 and crossed the 1/4 at 8,000. Car always had more MPH than it did bottom end. Best of 10.19 at 131mph with the iron heads. Camshaft is not overly big and the engine was not high compression either.

I’m running the old Holley 1050 that was on our W5 mill. It’s a two circuit with BLP metering blocks and bowls that Dom worked over for me years ago when we went to the Brett Miller 4500 intake.
We’d ran a Mopar 598 intake (4150 flange) with a Braswell 4825 (1.68 Venturi 1.79 throttle bores). Now with our “smallish” cam in these circles we thought maybe the huge plenum on the Miller intake would perhaps soften the hit some….. we were wrong. We ran a best et and mph in Tucson….. thats a lot of altitude and we were pleasantly surprised except for the wheels up part. It was two weeks after that we went to Irwindale (close to sea level 29.99 baro) and stood it on the bumper. She liked breathing there I guess. It’d be fun to try a larger carb :)

I think it would be worth a shot. Especially with that Brett Miller intake depending how high your spinning it. I have an AED 1150 I’m willing to sell if you’d be interested. Worked great on my car.
