72 dart with a 904 trans. The odometer works as it should(recording mileage) The speedometer(gauge needle)does not work properly. Just sitting it reads about 50mph and goes up or down as it is driven. Cable problem? gear problem?Thoughts.

Speedo has to come out and be repaired by a real speedo shop.

Sorry, the cable, lack of lube, or anything else will not make the speedo sit at 50 while standing still.

And if the odometer works but the speedo doesn't, it's in the speedo head. They both work off of the same cable.

Not sure if you want to but you could go with a GPS speedometer that also has an odometer. I put one in my car and it works great and I think it cost 55 bucks.

I got mine from Garmin!

I disconnected my speedo as the needle was bouncing all over the place ( not the cable)
