I'm still a happy camper, I wasn't really expecting to get it out without some kind of collateral damage. The same thing happened on the other side but it cracked in a different way so the loose bit can't go anywhere. I decided to leave it there. The bolt clamps the upper control arms but it also works as a lock so they cant come loose even if the clamp is a little damaged. The bolt would have to fall out and - believe me - it won't.
The issue is material related. The bolt is steel and the surrounding material is some sort of cast aluminum alloy. It oxidizes and seizes the bolt like it was heavy-duty Loctited the entire length.
I'll find a used leg and swap the whole thing. No biggie. What could possibly go wrong?
