Stop in for a cup of coffee

2nd Floor bath overhead light and exhaust fan. They will have seperate switches on the wall by the bedroom/nursury door. Because of the framing I went with in-line fan to the existing vent location. My first time working with EMT.
Gotcha. I was wondering what the in-line fan was for since it appeared to be exhausting outside.

Question...Any one ever lose a job after over 20 years? A good job......How did you deal with it?
For good or bad, no I haven't. Almost all of my adult life jobs have been time limited hires, or project limited hires. My first engineering job wasn't - but my coworkers explained how things work at that type of venture - they'ld been through the cycle 1/2 dozen times, many knew each other from previous jobs.

Lay-offs are a way of life in my business. In the 30 years since I first started, I have been through 9 different rounds of layoffs...and I survived 6 of them. The other 3, I was gone.

I have worked for 7 companies so far so you can see that in some of them there was more than one round of lay-offs during the time I was there...and in some, there were none.

It helps to see yourself as a mercenary business called Me, Inc. that provides services to another company until they don't need you anymore. Then you simply move to the next customer willing to pay you for your services.

He is taking it HARD!!!
It's not surprising. After that many years, you lose your perspective and sense of being an employee and begin to believe that it's like a family that you are part of. You also tend to define who you are by the job. When it's over, you take it personally with emotional turmoil similar to a divorce or romantic break up that was not of your choice. Many people often require psychological counseling similar to grief counseling to find their way out of the emotional trauma.

Dave, That's a good way to approach it.
I left that first company while things were still good but I could see what lay ahead. Maybe I should have hung in another 6- 12 months, but I had an offer I thought was good. Well the money and location was, so there it is. Now, that one laid me off after a couple of years. It took me a couple of months, maybe 4, but it helped me decide on a change to historic preservation.

I have a saying that I have used over the years to maintain my perspective about employment.

This is my job,

it is what I do 8 hours a day,
to earn my money,
to live my life,

Which is NOT my job!

He kind of feels useless.....And he is a drinker.....He has been **** faced for two days.....I am trying to keep him on a even keel....
That's rough man. It clearly had little to do with him. Hopefully in a little bit he'll come to see that. That's a niche business - but if its his thing, then maybe he can do like Dave said - use his contacts, see what he can do to match up buyers and manufacturers. Neon signs are cool, if he knows the repair side, there's people who want the classic ones repaired. All that's assuming its something he's into. Otherwise, maybe time for a change.

This guy had containers full coming in from China, a major player in that business...

I hear ya. I could do that at the companies (more as I got older), but it was harder when working public service. It was difficult for me when I realized that it was going to be much harder for me to get in permanently, or even some consistant term positions at my level, than it had been.

I never held a job for more than 5/6 years. Didnt like it and moved on. Kind of gypsy like.
Hey, no biggie i was looking for a job when i got this one.
For me,ending my automotive career as a self emlpoyed mechanic isnt my worst decision so far.

The man was a salesman, guess he should focus on selling his skills to the highest bidder.

The first thing he needs to do is rediscover himself beyond the definition of the previous job. Once he can see himself again as the expert in the field that he is, he can the focus on finding an opportunity for those skills.

He is wounded and lost at the moment and until he gets past that, he can't move forward.

His taking refuge in the drinking is his way of avoiding facing the reality of what has happened. He needs to deal with that reality and take control of it before anything else can happen.

See if you can get him to enroll in a job counseling program. They are experts at this stuff.

Answer is NO...Went into businss for myself when I was 23. I retired at age 44 when I sold it all to a Corporate Auto Giant,,,

My ex wife lost hers after 17 years. Her boss kept hitting on her and she put him in his place Not long after she was walked off. We even had an attorney and she lost. Went down hill fast and I blame that on our divorce. She never really recovered. He needs to get counseling perhaps. She was so down and nothing I could do helped. Started to build her a house but my mistake was I was spending more time on the house and in her eyes I abandoned her. But some Hot Dog at work said all the right things she was gone and I have never had the drive nor money to finish the house.
