I have run into a problem with my steering linkage hitting my headers. 69 Dart / TTI headers.( auto ) it has standard steering with 1974 disc brake set up on it. ( should not change anything. ) it’s on Schumacher mounts that I have shimmed up to raise it up to try to fix the issue so far it’s made me better but not usable. Anybody have thoughts?

Yeah, this thing is fighting me every time I look at it. I’ve come to conclusion this car hates me.

I would call TTI and see what they recommend for mounts. Also, investigate that you have the correct pittman and idler arms. Don't think about it, just DO IT. These cars are old and you could have anything on there. Even if you replaced them, double check. I would do everything in my power not to dent those headers. For what they cost, they are SUPPOSED to fit. ......and that ain't fittin.

I can and I have. The problem comes is I can’t get the bolt on the motor mount through the K member if I put too many shims there unless I grind up the member a little bit.

i know how i would and have fixed that problem it but i can't say here because i catch to much flack from the self proclaimed expert .
I used to partner with Hooker by supplying cars to use for designing
their Headers from my Car Dealerships. Jack Davis (RIP) was head of Hooker design
department and fabricated personally the most difficult headers to design for them

Until his passing he also personally custom fabricated and design all of our Stock/SS
headers. I still copy them today for our National Competitive Mopar Racecars. He was until his
passing one of the very top Header Engineers in the World.

He told me after extensive flow testing that you could significantly dent the headers
without any flow issues whatsoever to incur.

Flame away at me now Guys!!!

My Two Cents = For Free!

can you loosen the steering box bolts and see if it might drop some?

Shim up the trans mount a little? Loosen the header bolts and pull them up, push the collector up as high as they will go.

I agree that denting won't hurt performance, just hate to have to ding up a set of coated headers.

Engines Masters show, they beat on a set of headers without effecting the power much.

Weird, it's looks like the same place the Hedman 78030 has to be dented.

jimjimjimmy,

**** the flak from the " experts"

They screw up as much as the rest of us.

This is hot-rodding.

Never in the annals of hot-rodding cars did anyone ever say it was going to be easy.

Finding a solution that works for you is always the answer.

People can give you guidance and their experience but that's what it is guidance and experience , never a sure fire fix for your particular problem.

As we say in Newfoundland..

Get er done!!

Could try another Idler arm, I've seen more than a couple profiles for our cars.
Maybe a BAC Roller Idler could lower it. I'd call and ask Peter if they could make you one with 3/4-1" drop.

Not the same location that I needed to clear, but I was able to use a combination of floor jack on the collector to bend everything upwards a little. The I used a mini hydraulic ram against the frame rail and a small steel block to bend away from my steering box. Went from touching to ~1/2 an inch.
Moved it at least twice that far away but half of it was flexing and came back...
Still better than hammering on it, if you can find the right angles to apply the needed force.
If you've tried everything else already. If it were me, I might try a couple floor jack to ben it upward.

May or may not want/need to put a block between the collector and the car's floor to keep from raising the collector too high.

Like I mentioned, it's hard to tell how much room you have to work with. Any clearance you gain in one place can mean losing some somewhere else.

This is what did it for me. Got this set when it was on sale.
The little mini ram worked great for me but there are several other tools there, and one of them may work better in your space.

Good luck. Let us know.

....and who might that be? You caint be talkin about me because I'm an expert in nothing and have never claimed to be an expert about anything.

Honestly, it’s not a horsepower concerned. I’m not looking for a total performance. It just hurts the wallet after spending that money to put a hammer to these pipes .

I was on their website last week to look at their prices. Someone said that TTIs weren't all that expensive, so I looked. If you look carefully on their website (for a 69 A Body) They pretty much guarantee that the headers will fit even with Schumacher mounts. For a thousand dollars for coated small block headers, this is unacceptable. Study what they say about how well their headers fit before calling. It could be good ammunition.

I would call TTI and see what they recommend for mounts. Also, investigate that you have the correct pittman and idler arms. Don't think about it, just DO IT. AGREE with calling TTI. For a thousand bucks they SHOULD fit!

Well, as much as I hate to admit this, I’m in Canada and by the time they landed at my door, $1700 Bucks . So yes, taking a hammer to them hurts the wallet.
