Trying to check timing on my 340. Timing mark doesn't show up at all when I put a light on it. Car starts and runs great, could this be a distributor issue? Never run into this before.

Never even dawned on me, thanks guys, sounds like a winter project for me.

First make sure you have the timing light on the correct plug wire. (driver's side front) Has the engine been apart since the last time you timed it? Maybe a mismatch between balancer and timing cover/pointer? Spun outer ring on the balancer is a possibility too. I'd use a piston stop to verify timing slot on the balancer lines up with the timing cover TDC mark. That will tell the tale and is a good idea for all rebuilds, tune-ups, and performance issues.

Don’t just throw parts at it. Figure out where/why the timing mark is off and fix it correctly. You might just need the correct year timing cover or a new pointer.

Going to dig into it deeper next weekend. Took me 3 years to get it to the point I feal comfortable driving it. Going to baby it untill winter and then fix the problem.

Have you EVER checked it? AKA has the mark changed?

Dial up light, someone mentioned. In my life (I have about 14 years in the parts bu'ness) I've seen maybe 4 or 5 that were wrong

As mentioned, the balancer

You SURE you are on no1?

You run vacuum advance? Manifold or ported? Unhook the vacuum for sure

I have driven mopars since 1970, I assure you I know where #1 is and how to check timing. No disrespect to anyone here trying to help. I have heard of this problem but never experienced it. I'm going to check for true TDC and go from there
Thanks to all of you.

When the 340 was put in was the 69 timing cover used? Pass side markings.

Check on the driver's side too.

RPM is critical.
An original '72 distributor has a relatively low initial and a very fast and long primary advance. Can look in the book but probably 2 to 5* BTC at 750 rpm.
Put in a DC/MP distributor and set it to 12 - 15* BTDC at 650 or 700 and it too will run great.

Read either one at 800 or 850 rpm could be over 15* BTC.

Dana67Dart just nailed it. Looked up how to time a 69 GTS 340 on you tube and the timing marks are on the passenger side
Mine must have the 72 cover on it
Motor was in the car when I bought it. Going to find true top dead center and remark balance
Thanks for everybody's input on this

I have a 70 up cover on my 67 273 Dart with bolt on timing mark. I can read timing on both sides of the engine BUT... The timing mark on the drivers side is NOT 90 deg off of the mark on the pass side AND you have to use a different plug NOT #1 to see the timing mark on the balancer from the drivers side. If you can see the timing mark on the pass side of the damper then I would assume they used a 273 318 damper on the 340 and a 70 up cover

I picked up a new Timing Light, and I found out there is an arrow on the Clamp. It has to go a certain way. Not sure what type of light you have.

Yes, I think this was pointed to in post#7....

I think You misunderstood the nature of the question, have You checked it before meant 'this engine/combo as is' before, i.e. were the marks where they belonged & now they're not. And I've worked on cars for over 4 1/2 decades, over 3 1/2 professionally, and I've accidently hooked the wrong one avoiding hot mannys/headers.
I can assure You Del means no disrespect either when asking these questions, He has gone out of His way & has helped a TON of Members here.
Hope to see pics of Your rectified timing marks...peace!!

Make sure you have the plug wire clamp on #1. It's the front most plug on the driver's side. Stranger things have happened.
