I thought (could be wrong) that you may not find it there on '68 blocks. Just starting out ya know. I would look along the back of the bellhousing area for numbers too, near the end of the oil galley ports, on a 68.

Front pad and casting might give you some important dates as well.

I’m not definitely familiar with the 383 where is the oil pressure switch in between the bell housing and the engine area? Thanks.
Yes, like Lefty71 said, at the top of the block where it meets the bellhousing. If it's greasy you'll probably need to clean it to see it.

Not my picture, but this small block is in the same general spot.

On my '68 383 Road Runner, the VIN stamp was on the block near the oil pressure sensor.
That's not the vin number, that's the sequence number. You need the build sheet to tie it to the vin number. And yes, it's on the top rim where the Trans mates. It should also be stamped there on the transmission also.

Definitely the VIN. You can stand there and look from the VIN plate on the dash and look down to the engine and trans and see they match.
I found my pics. You can see 8B for 1968 and Hamtramck and then the sequence number.

I "think" there was a mid year change in 68 to go from bh to oil pan rail. Like @S'cuder showed, start with the bh, if nothing there then go to op rail. Oh if *** Monkey realizes its a #'s match BB, you will pay.
