If You ohm the pump and get really high to infinity, theres no doubt it's a wire or pump fail. Keep in mind that each stage/stop, You'd need to be sure to grip/secure the pipe before re-choking with the chain, cable, or sling.....I mean SURE! It would suck donkey balls to haul 275ft up & out only to lose the remaining 75ft back down the well with no way of retrieving it!

      Oh man!
Thats a hell of a pickle. If i was in your boots, i would call the well guy first and see how much to yank it out. They are set up to do it. and make quick work of it.

If you choose to pull it,its going to be heavy! If its pvc, the big wheel and tractor to pull it would be your best option.

we had to pull a few wells with iron pipe, crane on truck, and thread off pipe every 20 feet.
Used pipe wrench to lift them out, jaws would grab and lift on handle.one to lift and one to grab when resetting.

You live in Georgia..............I would think that you wouldn't have much trouble knowing someone that has an electric winch on their truck?? In Texas everyone has a winch. You could set up your engine puller or a make shift A frame and run the winch cable through a pulley. It would be much easier/faster and less stressful than doing it by hand??? Pay your friend a few bucks and some beer and BBQ!!!!

Rusty, I can appreciate wanting to do this job on your own,, I am like that also, but like Harry Callahan said, 'a man has got to know his limitations'.
For a job like this at least call in a professional - highly recommended well replacement company and have them give you a worst case estimate.
From that you can make a determination if you still want to do it your self.
And say the pump replacement is going to blow a $1500 dollar hole in your budget. Consider that at any point in time you can walk into your local auto parts store or hardware store and get a part time job, answering questions that you know the answer to, doing things easily that you know how to do and the employer would be glad to have you. At $10.00 per hour net after taxes, work 150 hours and you are back to even financially and you have a new well pump installed.

I’ve been in my house since 1985 and have changed my pump twice. Once with my ex wife and the second time with at the time my 20 year old son. Mine is relatively easy as it’s only 125 feet and pvc pipe. I set up a wooden ladder to lift it off the shrader valve (I think that’s what it’s called) then the two of us grabbed it and started the pulling job. I sure love my well water but that job is on my rather not do it again list.

Rob....not much help on the pump removal, but can offer a suggestion to flush the commode. If you have a 5 gallon bucket or 2 sitting around, go to the closest creek and fill em up. Bring them home and pour them in the back of the commode after you flush it. If you have 2 bathrooms, just use one to pee in so you don't have to flush it but maybe once a day. "If it's yellow, let it mellow." "If it's brown, flush it down!" I had to go to FL to work a few years ago after a hurricane. Didn't have power in the hotel, so I carried the trash can from my room to the swimming pool to get water to flush with. It works! Sorry for your troubles....hope you get it fixed soon.

Oh yeah. We got enough water from town from our local Oreilly to flush toilet and whatnot.

I also have one of the local well companies coming out to take a look and give an estimate......but it's gonna get fixed. lol

Well......I had to do something I didn't want to, but we're still able to get it done within our means. I had a small loan with the local bank that I have TWO payments left on. I just renewed it. LMAO. But at least we can git r done.

It may be 340’ well but I guarantee the pump isn’t down that far. Be interesting to see how far down it is.

                    Agreed.

I helped a friend about 10 years ago replace his well pump. It was only about 190 feet down, but the well driller guys had it up in less than an hour. New pump, new pipe, and new cable installed by me.....some previous owner had 'red-necked' the cable job - used 4 sections of household plastic sheath cable with normal connectors....moron.

I was called about 9:00am that morning...arranged the cable and went to site (an hour away) and it was all over about 3:00pm.

Seriously.......consider calling the experts. The last thing you want is this home job going wrong. You already realise how vital your water supply is. Don't go making the situation worse.

                    Good luck.

I would venture to bet our city water yearly bill is close to what your 20 year pump is going to cost...

Well, surprisingly, the pump is good. The pressure switch was bad. I already had a new bladder tank to install and relocate. They put the tank under the house originally, which I thought was stupid. So now we have the new tank, filter and pressure switch outside, next to the well like it's supposed to be and we have water again and at the fraction of the price I thought it would cost. Yay.

would i be correct to infer you got a professional out, and they rediagnosed the problem?
i can only imagine how mad id be if i had gone through all the trouble to replace that only to find that wasnt the issue

If its 340 feet, how much chain are you going to buy??????
you could hook up a harbor freight predator engine to it somehow instead of all that manual labor.
