What Are You Doing To/With Your Car Today?

-
I started refurbishing the driver side rear quarter window and regulator. When I disassembled the car many years ago, I removed the passenger side quarter window and regulator. After I saw how many moving parts there were, I decided to leave the driver's side intact in the car so I'd have a model to use to re-install. So glad I did. Now that the passenger side is done, I'm moving on the replace rollers, etc in the driver side.

Pumped my intake full of smoke.. had some in the valley but i think it was from blowby in the cyls that have open valves.. going to loosen my rockers this weekend and do it again with the valves all closed just to be sure.. then put it back together..

P.S. i reek of cigar :( Great way to make smoke for testing but the smell is horrible

OHH.. also drilled my cam thrust plate and galley plug so i have pressurized chain oiling now... thing was too dry

Got the call this morning to bring the Jaundiced GT to my mechanic/friend (Doug) to have the rear end rebuilt. It is a 741 case 8 3/4" sure-grip with, what I was told was, 3.23:1 gears (however, the online calculators tell me it has 3.55:1 gears). Doug told me he'll have it done by the end of next week. Now it's time to clean/organize the garage.

you changing gears or did something break?

I had an MRI today, so really didn't do anything today, but this past week, been working on my 63 Valiant's brakes (done), my 67 Barracuda's engine and my golf cart.

The Barracuda's motor is mostly apart enough to change the cam, except for removing one intake gasket and actually pulling out the old cam and removing the oil pan. Got the front of the motor painted. Old oil pan will be replaced by Kevco.

Trunk full of parts removed. (Gotta put them somewhere.)

I already posted this, but here's my freshly painted, undamaged K frame and new 20:1 steering box. I also have boxed and painted lower control arms, tubular upper control arms and .960 torsion bars

Finally, I'm putting a new steering gear box in my 1997 EZ-GO golf cart. Old one had 8-10 inches of play.

The little girl around the corner, calls it the "pop-pop car". I wonder why?
Hopefully these new Remflex header gaskets will put an end to that.

So to answer question, drive here, more smiles per gallon. Gears, engine and trans is doing great, quite ans smooth tall boys at 2.97 with a sure grip, picture below was at a chebby friends home I visited last week

Things snowballed. Originally my plan was new carpet and a heater core. Well I had new door panels I had stored for two years, and new door sills, and why not restore the kick panels, and repaint the dashboard!

It was ordered without a radio, I am thinking ordered as a street racer or they were a cheapskate LOL. They did order the important stuff, FJ6, V24, J81..:)

Making fancy valve cover/ valley pan hold down covers for my Lincoln Y-Block. These will also work on a Ford Y-Block as well, and probably other engine from the 50's-60's.

I bought a bunch of OEM type hold downs from RockAuto, then I pull the rubber washer out of them, and install in the ones I made.

Made two different tops because I couldn't decide which one I like better. Bolt head up or bolt head recessed. Designed them to use an ARP stainless steel bolt.

Look nice with an Allen too

They all came with a hex headed bolt in the day. I actually trim the ARP off in the lathe, cut a slight radius, and then repolish them.

I can't see them held down with an Allen, but to each their own. Also hard to find a high quality stainless steel Allen bolts.

Repairing the Thermo-Quad on my 360. It's a 9811S that I bought used, rebuilt and tweaked it about 25 years ago. The car ran well, but was moderately hard to start after running, then sitting a short time. When it fired, it belched black smoked. I suspected a drain back due to the quad X-rings or the bowl jet wells. This only started recently. I also noted that the accelerator pump was not squirting, but you could not tell when driving it. That was just a stuck check valve below the pump cluster (squirter).

Because it is in decent shape, like all my carburetors that I have previously done, I only repair and replace what is needed unless the condition warrants a full rebuild. I tore it down and found the quad X-rings had deteriorated. I switched everything to non-ethanol gas in 2014-2015, but this had run time before that. The body gaskets were reasonable, but brittle enough to break when separating.

The jet wells looked okay, but I set up a test of the jet wells with gas and lacquer thinner in the bowls, with the outer surfaces clean and dry sitting on a paper towel and watch for any leaking over a few hours. There was no leakage.

Because it is not a rebuild, I did not use my old, good, Berryman carburetor cleaner boosted with MEK, but cleaned the parts with spray cleaner. For repairs, I don't use a kit, just pull parts such as gaskets from my collection.

The original nitrophyl floats were good, and I have a few new floats from which to choose, but I opted to switch to brass.

After repairs, it was reinstalled and works fine again.

The deteriorated X-rings were allowing the gas to drain into the engine resulting in a flooded condition that caused the hot start issue and subsequent black smoke.

The 9811S Super-Quad here was originally equipped with an electric choke. It was missing from this one, but I am using it on a stock 340 intake with the factory divorced, electrically assisted choke on this engine.

Nothing broke, and I'm keeping the current gear ratio. Hopefully the online calculators are correct with the calculated 3.55:1 number.

The car has 123K miles on it and has been making some noise for quite a while. It also has a vibration that another shop "fixed" by adjusting the pinion angle with shims. The shims didn't fix the vibration. My mechanic/friend (Doug) will find and fix the problem. He does a lot of work for many of the guys in our club.

Got the brakes working perfectly after battling a bad NEW master cylinder :BangHead:
Took it for a ride to get some ice cream and enjoy the new brakes!!

Awesome :) your post reminded me of a dream i had last night.. i was driving one of my old cars and was soooo happy with the brakes :) My current car i swapped to manual disc and hate them soo much compared to drums. (which is why i probably had the dream)

If you ever have to replace them again.. try the percys aluminum gaskets.. i'm very happy with them and are reusable.. I still orange rtv them though.. can't stand leaks :) Looks like proform is making a cheaper knockoff of them too
