4 MPG criusing on the highway I did a retest and got 60 miles from 10 gallons at 70mph
Dodge 3000 lbs
496 CI\
850 vac Sec
906 heads ported polished
MP 590 Cam
3.23 gear

727 3000 stall(2600 actually)
3100 RPM at 70MPH

What combo and mileage are you guy/s getting?
I am not a drag racer presently hence the 3,23 rear gear

If you want mileage, get rid of the cam and probably the stall converter

Go find yourself the modern day equivalent of the old sixpack cam

Get a vacuum advance distributor

A real world, old timey comparison:

Once upon a time, in a life a long time ago, my old '70 sixpack RR with the sixpack intake removed, and an 800 Holley DP, headers, 3.54, G60X15 rear tires, and a recurved factory dual point dist ran right at 3000 at 70 mph. That thing WITHOUT careful driving, and "hang on" A/C got just under 14 mpg back in the 70+ mph days

Later, the same car with a 71 (high compression) 340 swapped in, headers other wise stock, would get 17.5 mpg and better. That combo would run right with a stock 383 RR. In 73, I drove this combo from San Diego (Miramar) to N. Idaho to bury my little brother. Through Oregon, they had 75 mph limits then, and even at 75-80 mph, that 340 cranked out 14-15 mpg!!

I must stress AGAIN that I did not ever drive with an "egg under my foot." When I got onto the freeway, I got ON the freeway. I'm not one of those guys who gets to the end of a ramp doing 40 mph!!

This car weighed 3860 with "some gas" and a spare tire. I was in the Navy then, and typically had a LOT of weight, including two huge toolboxes in the trunk. This WAS a 4 speed rather than TF.

360
eddy tunnel ram
mopar 474 cam
no vac advance
904 tranny 3800 stall converter
3.23's

with holley carbs ( 2- 390's ) was was getting 14-16 mpg
with EFI ( EZ) i get more consistant 16 mpg

thats at 75 mph, turning 3200 rpm

318 .30 over
ld4b intake 650 carb
675 casting heads 1.88 / 1.60 mild porting, .039 head gasket.
windage tray
340 purple cam, not degreed, double row timing chain
timing set at 36 degrees, with vac advance.
overdrive 4 speed with 26 tall tire and 2:76 gear.
I can knock down about 22 MPG on the hwy and about 15 in the city.

Nice barracuda-- Sounds like I need to biuld a small block?
I've always owned MOPAR-
15 years ago I had a 440 in a 71 Ramcharger 4X4 and i got 2 MPG
FUN in the MUD had 44 ground hogs (Rolled it down a Hill) End of ramcharger

360 with stroker
13:1 compression
292* .552 lift
850 proform
4:30 gears
4 speed
8 gal fuel cell
4-6 mpg driving easy

225
1bbl
single 2in exhaust
294 one legger
p/s
a/c
I get 20 mpg with the air on and 22 with the air off.

No disrespect intended...BUT GAS was quite a bit different back in the 70's and that combo will likely NOT provide the same performance today...and with todays gas, Vacuum advance is moot,

Time your car properly, change plugs Filters often, stay out of the pedal and your mileage will improve

"its a Hemi Who Cares" LOL
I am not complaining I am curious.
I had a boat that sucked more and wasn't 1/2 as much fun

I get great mileage right now when its riding a round in the trailer with no motor. When the new motor go's in who know's but it is a 9.5 to 1 pump gas motor, although the 4.56's I think will be a problem I'm hoping to break 8 mpg.:glasses8:

stock build 71 340 demon with tremec 5 speed
355 gears 255-70-15 tires (I think) checked milage
on a 300 mile round trip took it easy (very hard to do)
got 25 MPG ofcourse that's wasn't the normal way
to drive the car tachs around 1800 RMP at 65 MPH
in 5th gear

Mild 440
18-spline 4sp
3.23SG 8-3/4
67 Dart GT convertible.

The motor is a little tired (and the carb is more tired), but several years ago we were able to pull about 15mpg on the highway keeping it under 70mph. 10-12mpg in town.

WOW---what size carb? and cam?

Yes I realize fuel is "different" but not from 14 to 4. I don't understand your comment about vacuum advance----they are one VERY important aspect of mileage.

You put your foot in--the advance drops back to the "full power" setting of the mechanical limits

You take your foot out--the vacuum comes up--and the advance goes up another 10* or so under light load Gas or no, THAT part has not changed

See the August Hot Rod yet? They are claiming 11.5 mpg from there Hemi Super Bee with a Dominator, 3.73's and a 30" tall, 3k rpm cruise speed.....

Exactly! I found that out when I went from a lean burn 360 to a vacuum advance dizzy real fast, what a huge improvment!

I loose 5mpg when I disconnect the vacuum advance on the highway, tested it once, 383/727/8 3/4 with 3.91 gears. You could almost hear that sucking sound.:evil2:

Great question. This past weekend I took my Demon on a 500 mile round trip from east coast of Virginia to Roanoke. Route includes lots of fairly steep "hills" and there was two of us in the car and our luggage. No wide open throttle, just drove normal speed (60-65 MPH) but didn't really baby it.

Mileage:15.46 mpg

Here's the specifics on my Demon:

Engine: 408
- Compression: 10:1
Fuel type: 93 octance pump gas
Carb: 950 Holley with mechanical secondary
Cam: Hyd Roller
- Duration: 242/248
- Lift: 570/562
Ignition: FBO with stock Chrysler Electronic recurved distributor and a vacuum advance
Trans: 4-speed (close ratio gear set)
Rear gears: 3:55
Rear Tires: Nitto Drag Radials; 25.75 inches tall (275/50-15)

Nice car, got any more photos????

.030 over 440
12.5 to 1 comp
solid cam .585 lift, 310 dur
Quick fuel 850 carb
456 gears
29 inch tall tire
This past week end combo highway, 60 at 3200, and city, averaged 8mpg.
If your happy with your combo, but hate the mileage, I would have spent money on an overdrive!
Just my 2 cents
