Just a quick calculation from the data on Garmin and your tach.

Projected RPM at 156 mph would be 5736.

    rpm? 2500 rpm
    ______ X _______

    156 mph 68 mph

Who cares how accurate Garmin is...anyway you look at it a 5000 rpm blast with 2.94 gears and 28" tires is hauling ass!!!! I was a fun picture to say the least.

Great suspension engineering from Bill R.

Like others have said overdrive is just an extra gear. You can keep short rear gears and do all the same things you mentioned in your OP but when you aren't running balls-out you can shift one more time and have the RPMs drop to a nice mellow level. It's not like you HAVE to drive in top gear all the time, or the overdrive somehow affects your other gear ratios... Try driving a good high-performance car with overdrive (better yet a Mopar musclecar) and you'll quickly figure out why everybody wants one. My friend's 360-powered '73 B200 has 4.10s and it is fun around town but it gets old kinda soon on highway trips longer than 5 minutes...

    With a 4 speed and 3:91's/ 4:10's, now we're talkin.
Feel, control, and neck snapping performance, you've got it all there.
And you can boil the hides off at will.
And a lotta smiles per gallon.
    That's what it's all about!
Unless you are driving over 200 miles, then it gets old fast.
    Tom.

Having four gears for the track and a fifth one for the highway gives you the best of both worlds. Hopefully those new five speeds will come out soon.

Yep, I was driving my old beater--92 olds with a tall 3rd gear--on the freeway around 75mph--it feels fast in that junk car, lol A large flock of black birds came around and one birdie sat down on the pavement, my foot went off the gas but car didn't slow down enough and the car hit the birdie as it was flying off.

No biggie--that time but it would had been avoided if the car would had started slowing down as soon as the gas was let off.
