Why does Dodge go cheap with their steel?

That is why I only have Chevy trucks
Chevy trucks rust so bad on the rockers and wheel wells. Trust me, guys at work have fairly new ones and rust rust rust. Another co-worker bought a brand new Ford in 2010, and it has rusted wheel wells. Here is my '01 Ram, 236,*** miles and no rust. Frame is black, like new! not brown. Yes, I live in a rust belt state.

Well, aside from the bailout BS and the fact that they are owned by Fiat now...

My LAST ram, which will always be my last ram, was an 05 Hemi RCLB 2500 I bought in 08 with 50k miles. That truck was the biggest POS I have ever owned. Plowing my own driveway I lost the transmission at 68k miles, had EVERYTHING in the front end need to be replaced under 80k miles, (bearings, inner/outer tie rods, ball joints, u-joints, everything) steering linkages, master cylinder, both catalytic converters were failing, bed had rust bubbled by year 4 as well as both bumpers were rusting out. Add to that that in the winter I got single digit fuel mileage, just terrible.

I know (living in the snow belt) rust is inevitable, but some things are just ridiculous. I'll never own another ram.

I just spent the afternoon yesterday hanging around a buddies shop, he was working on a ford that the plastic intake had started melting on, letting coolant in to everything--140,000 mi. on it ! neighbor across the street has a chevy truck newer than mine w/ the fender wells rusting out on both sides. there are problems w/ all of them . the newest chevys are butt ugly too. they aren`t selling real well around here. I`ve been around too many bad ford products to want another , myself.

as long as everyone keeps paying 50 to 80 grand for a truck they will even find more ways to make them cheaper and charge more .

There is no way in hell I would ever buy any New truck no matter the brand. They all are overpriced for what you get now days. But my attitude does not help the economy.

2004 Dakota. No rust at all...ya'know California and all

When I bought it, I read the Consumer Reports info on my truck, it didn't get the greatest reviews.
This truck has been rock solid. Only had to replace the water pump, battery and gen. maintenance since new. 178,000 miles. Plan to own it another 20 years as I don't drive it much anymore.

Sticker was $24,000 - Paid $16,000

Soooooo true. I rented a chevy suburban on vacation last year. Had to be a 40 grand rig, minimum. If I had paid 40k and that is what I got, id have been PISSED! Plastic, cheapie, **** navagation, un-intuitive, etc. I'm letting someone else take the hit, and then buying used from now on, but then used trucks are way overpriced too. Hell, everything is overpriced vehicle wise.

I have a 22 year old ram with not one ounce of rust anywhere. Around here , at night , you can HEAR the Chevies rust

i bought my 2014 silverado wt regular cab long bed 4x4 with the 5.3 no carpet no power windows etc new for 20k still a lot of money but seems to me if you actually buy a truck, (not a suv with a 4 foot box) prices are fairly reasonable

Where ever you live, don't move. I see 20-25yr old GM's every day on the road. Fords from the 90s are becoming a rare sight, and old Dodges are non-existent. I can't even remember the last W/D Dodge I saw on the road. I'll see an old square body Ford occasionally. An old WD Dodge is generally seen rusting behind a barn around here and the inspection sticker is from '97.

My daily driver is a reg cab long bed work truck. Rubber floor, manual transfer case, ect. $28k out the door.

My brand new ram was rusting out the bottom of the doors and bed within 5 years. Sad. I had just paid it off. Next used truck I buy will be from my brothers area of south GA. No salt and no rust down there.
What's the corrosion warranty?

In defense of Dodge from my point of view, I have an 05 Rumble bee that I bought in Mar. of 05. It has a build date of Oct.04. I still have the original battery, 12 years old, and have spent roughly about $300 in maintenance. 1 front bearing hub, egr valve and a oil pressure switch. GM trucks are having engines dying on the road. So far my truck has been very dependable and no visible rust on the body.

Doesn't matter what the warranty says. Everything with Dodge is a fight. Paid roughly $3000 for the "lifetime" warranty on my wife's Challenger. That POS is growing roots in my garage. Someday the lawyers will figure it out. Until then they've got my $50k. GM will just about buy me dinner for a squeek or rattle.

Same here, water pump and battery 177,000.

please tell us more about this POS challenger

don't understand why people buy something made of metal, don't coat or protect that metal yearly and still expect it not to corrode. $129 yearly to Krown Rustproofing (Ontario) 2010 Ram, no rust, money well spent?, won't know for another 20 years. stay tuned!!

if anything take a powerwasher to the underside often, that helps tremendously, often the people complaining about rust dont wash their vehicles more than once or twice a year

Show me a power washer that is going to work in sub-freezing temps and melts the faucet so I can power wash my truck.

I do wash my truck as regular as I can, problem being it's big, and takes about $25 each wash, and washing it is pointless when there is still snow/sand/salt/melt on the roads.

This is the third one. The other ones sucked too. This one is a 2012 392 6spd. Not even gonna get into the electrical issues or overall problems. The engine on this thing sounds like a Cummins. Actually more like a diesel powered sewing machine. It's had the entire valve train replaced multiple times. The mechanics know it's f'd up, the service manager knows it's f'd up, and Dodge will not let them do a crate motor. They had their regional specialist come in and the guy lied right to my face. Told me that the clearances were within spec. What clearances? What spec? No answer. A hydraulic roller with clearance? Go f' yourself! A Toyota minivan could kick this cars *** and they tell me everything is fine. The steering issues... Well let's just say that a car that does whatever it wants is a bit unnerving. Like I said, the lawyers can figure it out.

Mines an '05 (see rust pics) 130K. Sits out 365 days a year. Had just a small splash guard in the front of the rear wheel. The rest all open in the well. Nothings forever, not even Fords or Chevy around here. Seen many with rotted out rockers and wheel wells. Guess I'm learning body work this summer, LOL.

Heard of Ziebart? Had my '89 Ramcharger "rustproofed" by them, their "best" application. When I started to see rust bubbles in the paint in front of the right wheel, I brought it to them. They gave me a refund and that was that. Guessing they just bank on you trading cars.

Underbody spray at the drive through wash helps.

You mean a car wash? Read the rest of my post.
i read it the first time... funny only cost about 5 bucks for a good 8 minutes at the powerwashing station here, i do it every 2 weeks whether theres snow or not, 90degrees or -10 no real issues for me, main point is salt and brine doesnt get much a chance to eat at the metal if youre constantly washing it off, when you live in a cold weather climate i consider it just basic maintenance

Well, you either have a hover-car or missed the point I made, that the soon as you drive on crap-covered roads it doesn't matter how often you wash it, it's getting covered again.

"washing it is pointless when there is still snow/sand/salt/melt on the roads."
