The tear-down of Jake's 65 begins....

Two week vaca to Niagara, Ottawa, Montreal, New Hamshire, Boston and the Poconos, followed by 3 days in Carlisle where we met 4 or 5 members from FABO.... That's what's up with us... What's up with you, little boog-a-loo? LOL

Made a little progress this afternoon.... finished trimming out for the Layson's patch and have it clamped in place for the test fit. Tomorrow eve, we hope to prep the edge of the old and get it tacked in place.....

I'm starting to get excited-er again...lol

Thanks 65 D.... and thanks to everyone who is watching and already commented on progress along the way! I'm HOPING that when I'm off the whole second week of August, we can make some REAL progress on her.... I'd like to have the bodywork done by the end of August and then start on the front suspension and scarebird disc conversion in September. I would love to be tearing the 273 apart by October.... We shall see.
 
It's really great to see how far you guys have come since last year. Keep us posted on whats next.

True that brother.....

Last night we finshed welding in the lower 1/4.... nothing tonight or tomorrow night - Church and then Jake's last summer soccer game.... Hope to have the welds ground down and skimmed by Saturday night...All depends on what the social coordinator has planned with us and the lil'er kids.... If we get on it,I'll have pics Saturday night or Sunday...
 
So the weekend had me ripping out the rear slider on the house and rebuilding with a wall and two windows... Sooooooooo no work over the weekend on the car... Last night after cutting the lawn, Jake picked up the angle grinder and smoothed out the welds while the wife and I started packing the camper for this weekend's trip to Cape May, NJ. I managed to get an action shot or two.... With the lighting starting to fade in the evening, got a pretty cool effect...

You're doing a great work on that Barracuda. Looking forward to see when it's gets the paint. What color?
 
He's going to put my ametuer body skills to the test.... wants it black with a dark purple formula S type stripe down the center....
 
Just popped into this thread. Wow you guys are doing an awesome job! that will be one happy boy all said and done! Gotta love the full time hobby of car resto.. Look forward to seeing it progress :)
 
So while I finished welding the underside of the right qtr, Jake started taking the right front suspension apart.... I introduced him to the pickle fork and upper ball joint socket (complete with a breaker bar and old floor jack handle for leverage....) We're doing the Scarebird disc brake conversion along with the front end rebuild. A buddy of mine sells industrial parts and is setting me up with the best wheel bearings he can get for a fraction of the cost for what I can buy anywhere else. I've never had the front of one of these little A's apart before.... I was surprised at how small the bearings are compared to my Fury....

So we finished removing the right front suspension this evening... The went on an hour long driving lesson in the dark with the rookie.... He's doing really well -at driving too...LOL
I finally put the little shelf up between the garage doors and bolted the bench grinder down... Will make it easier to wire-wheel some of the front end parts before slapping onthe por-15 type blackstuff - I call it that because we don't have it yet... Friend of mine deals in paints and coatings and is getting us a gallon of his best liquid coating...I'll let y'all know what it is when we get it in hand....

Kind of took a different direction this week.. was going to thrash on the rest of the body work since I'm off all week, but decided to tackle the front suspension and hang with Jake's lil bro and sis...gotta spread the love, ya know...

So as of this morning, the front suspension is done, scarebird's conversion has begun - still need to re-drill the rotors for the 5x4's... Drilling the studs out of the hub to put the longer ones in wasn't too terrible of a job... drilled the heads off from the back side and pushed them out thru the front to keep from screwing the holes up with the swedges.... Hope to have the rear brakes functional via the park brake by tomorrow sorolling it out of the garage and into the driveway (inclined) is not so scary...........

Are you going to rebuild the engine to stock specs? Maybe Charger option?
 
The original 273 is froze/stuck. If the bottom end is salvagable, we'll save it and use a pair of early 80's 318 heads that are already done and edelbrock intake (that we still need to send to Leanna). If it is too far gone, I have a '69 318 out of my Wanna-Bee project that will go in it. Either way, small cam, 4 barrel carb, maybe Dakota/Durango exhaust manifolds. The rear has 3.23 gears in it.

Rear brakes are now on and functional between my last post and this one.... Time to play with the little kids before Jake getshome from soccer and the orthodontist... The it's off to the mall and game room/arcade for the afternoon.........

I miss those endless hours spent at the Defender machine. :-D
 
Scarebird conversion is done, dual master is in, all new brake lines made and installed... We now have a functional braking system and a feel ing of accomplishment! We also coated the fuel tank and put it up in place.... Freed up some shelf space with doing that - allowed room to get the 2 tubs of kids clothes down so the wife could get the size 4's, 5's and 6's out for Jake's lil brother....

Had to file the opening of the scarebird bracket at the top and bottom a little - The calipers were thiiiiiiiiiiiis close to fitting.... The calipers also had a nub/tab on the inner side where it went up aganst the spindle/bracket - had to file that off as well....

So maybe another 9 to 12 months and we can test the brakes out with a running driveline...lol
