ok, i hate doing outside work. i would rather find/buy/ restore car i want, but money is so tight,i had to take on a frame off resto on a 66 ferd f 100 shortbed,3 speed on the tree resto. it looked simple from the beggining. it was a daily work truck. but had alot of peeling issues.
so, i look the truck over, and gave an estimate to redo it with him buying all the material. paint and all assoiciated body shop stuff wrung up to 1650.00

this was to pull fenders, doors, bed, glass off.
once getting into, i find all the uglies and now became a full frame off resto.

i just do not know how to charge for the additianal weeks worth of work. i mean what is the cost difference of leaving the main structurre on rather than taking it off. i see on the shows on tv, they say full resto, but all they do is blow black undercoat on the underside without removing much.
i have this truck in 200 pieces. it is a all out on my end.

still, it will not be perfect, as i would like, but he does not want to take a few extra steps that i would, since going this far into it.
i qutoed him 3k to redo the truck, but now i see i am doing it for peanuts. and it is 2 tone at that. i have at least 350 hours into as of now, and i am just getting paint onto stuff like doors and fenders.
at this rate, i will have about 1k hours into it. then i still have to revfresh the engine before dropping it back in.

what do you guys think? do i ask for more compensation or leave it alone?

i am using an android cell, and i have no clue hoe to post progress pics

stay tuned

Hey, ask him to help out man, whether with labor or cost. There is no free lunch on hard *** labor, if he gets tough guy on you, ask him if he would do his job for 10% that he usually gets paid. See what he says.

That's a ridiculous deal you've got going on, I hope this isn't your only source of income... If he doesn't help, then screw it, throw that pile of crap out of your garage by the dumpster and wish him luck.

Don't sell yourself short. Good luck.

yea. i love doing the work. i have done a few mopars on here and they all turned out great from start tgo finish. i just cannot learn to keep one as i want to sell it asap and start another. this is why i hat doing outside work.
but, i owe a member on here, and he has waited patiently for me

Well don't become a slave to your hobby. Set up some boundaries and guidelines. The clearer the better, the sooner the better.

I think if he is any kind of "man" he will see what you are doing. Get him over to have a look and show him the "extras" that will make it right. Remember, it was a quote, but sometimes those change as circumstances arise. The bodywork is worth more than that, and the engine should be added on top. Tough one, good luck.

It all depends on the deal you made. If you both agreed to do *** for *** amount of $$$ and you went further without getting another agreement to go ahead to do *** for additional $$$ I think it very could be a problem. I would be really unhappy if someone was spending $$$ I might not have without asking first. He may have a limit on what he wants to or can afford to spend on this project. The big thing is commmunication, communication, communication. He may be able and willing to kick in more money.

I don't agree with you on this one and it sure isn't the way to make friends but is a sure way to kill any future business or cars that he may send his way. Your word is your reputation.

I know you are a fair person from what we have dealt on. Stop where you are and negotiate any additional work that needs to be done but hasn't been done that wasn't part of the original deal. If he doesn't want to go any further past what you have agreed on then only do what you have agreed to do and eat what you did without an agreement.

None of us want to work for nothing and believe me I have made deals where I have lost money to do a job. Did I like it, heck no? Most of the time but not always, it came back in referals that I did make some good money on. One of those deals was on a mattress contract that I lost just over $5.00 in real money besides my labor on every mattress I did on a contract for Oklahoma State University. That cost me over a $1000.00 in real money plus all my labor. Soon after I was handed an open ended contract from them for $2483.90 a month for rebuilding their box springs so I ended up with an almost $30K a year contract that I made big bank on.

It is simple, you did it at first view.Simply, you did not know. The concern,is explaining it,to the owner.Show him ,what you found, let him make the decision ,on his choice.....

I only see a price "paint and all assoiciated body shop stuff wrung up to 1650.00". I see no where in his post to where he gave us the labor quote.

I presumed this meant the whole job was quoted at $3000

Damn, I need glasses for my glasses.

I reread the post again and I think he is getting $3000 labor.

This says a lot about the situation.

Solid advice.

I charge an hourly rate out my shop for anything mechanical or body/paint and give a rough estimate for how many hours may be involved..mabe show him where you are at and say the truck needs alot more work than the initial $3000 quote and show him why that is and give him the option to either put most of it back the way it was *after finishing the paint* or proceed forward with an hourly rate on anything else? The shop rate around where i live is around $90-$100 hour at most shops..i charge friends $30h and walk ins $60h..my friends are getting a screeming deal as that just covers my time, just a few ideas to throw your way..good luck and try not to get too stressed ;)

The problem is that the price was a quote, not an estimate. I agree that he needs more money for the job but soon this could become a Barrett Jackson price that could exceed the value of the truck. I hate deals like this and would have stayed with in the original agreement until the problems showed up. Right then and there is where I would have stopped and let the owner make the choice on if he wanted to go further at an additional cost. If not then the truck should not have had the cab removed and the job should have been finished as agreed. What is a 66 Ford short bed worth with a home based but nice restoration?

I am in the same boat as you. I am a glutten for punishment my wife says. What I normally do is give a rough estimate of what it will cost to do the job, but explain the inherent risk of restoring cars. Then I ask them what their budget is and try to work within their restraints. If that is not possible then I will work up to their budget without sacrificing quality and have them bring the vehicle back when they are ready to move foward or do the vehicle in steps or sections. But that is just may 2 cents

So I would stop and sit down with the customer and re assess the project and lay it out on the table. If your customer as any clue and can see the writing on the wall. He should be more than willing to shell out the dough for the extra work.

Here is the project that I am knee deep in right now. 39 Ford Pick Up

As soon as you found the ugly you should have stopped and had him come look at it. This would have given him the chance to cut his losses. Now one of you are going to be commited to finishing the truck. Hopefully he has deeper pockets and can afford the needed work.

I don't mean to flame, The OP didn't really say what the extending circumstances were, oh it was some guy on fabo, it was a close friend, it was this it was that.

I'm the first one to help someone in need, hell I've done stuff for free plenty of times, it feels good to give, but you've got to ask would they do the same for you... In this instance I hope it's circular.

If it weren't all those things we now know, your telling me your gonna take the raw dog, get abused so you can maybe get future crummy business, from some jackass that ripped you off's circle of friends?? I think not. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

You know what isn't 'a good way to make friends?' Taking them to the cleaners. I can just see it now.... "Oh yeah, you need that car restored? Got a friend that will do it for next to free!"

Riiiight. Great way to grow business. Better have a backup career.

Be honest. Communicate. Do the best work you can under the circumstances. Keep your customer fully informed. Be true to yourself. Restoration work is a heck of a lot different than general auto repair and you know it and your customer should know that, also. I'm sure you can work it out with the guy. You may not make what you should on the job at this point, but you'll be able to look at yourself in the mirror.

I would rather lose a little money and keep the quality of my work than do inferior work to make a buck.

Who the person is that is having the restoration done and if they are a member her makes absolutely no difference and is a mute point. I am just saying a quote for a price and is a contract while an estimate is I might be able to do this depending on what I find. If you wreck your car and a shop is written a check to repair the car then they find more damage they contact the insurance company immediately before proceeding with any additional work. Then it is the insurance company that chooses to give the shop the go ahead or total the car. I have seen plenty of cars go through CoPart that was insurance labeled cars that the work had been started and never finished. I can only assume that this is what happened in all these cases. We have bought some of them and found paperwork in them showing that is exactly what happened.
There is a procedure to correctly do business and there are reasons that it is done that way. Not everyone is a cash cow and most have to work within their financial restraints. There is also a point to where the all the restoration costs combined exceed the value of the vehicle. There are restorations done where the vehicle owner only wanted it to be done as a decent looking daily driver.
Having worked on plenty of those 66 back F series pick ups I do know they are pretty easy to go over in detail before you start working on them. I happen to have one of them right now and the plan is to build one out of three and in the end it will be a 4 wheel drive short bed 1966 F 100 but since I got hurt there are things that I can't do myself so there is the question if I will even end up doing it because of the total cost. Combined costs has been why the OP has parted so many cars when others have been crying about him parting them so he knows the ropes in that area.

guys, i should of been more clear. i am friends with this guy. he understands resto work. i was asking it as more less a consious thing. like should i or should i not.
he also has a 54 ford car he wants me to rat rod out, and his pride and jewel 70 torino gt that he is planning to putb25k into.
he does not want them redo for money, but yet they all came from passed family and they are sentimental to him.

i am sure he woul pay more for the amount of time/ work going above and beyond.

and i have decided that if he does not on his own, so be it. ill live with it. as i am in the fight of my life right now with bills, so this will help my family. plus, i more less was qutoing 3k in labor and that is what ill stick to. thanks to all

once i fig out how to get pic from this phone, ill post some

We can just hope he kicks in a nice bonus at the end of the deal. I have done that many times when I felt like it needed to happen and I could afford it. Sounds like you already have more work coming so you should be able to recover from future jobs. I wish you all the best as I have followed your recent posts and understand what you have been and are going through. You are on my prayer list.

thanks . as that means alot comming from a gentleman like yourself. also thanks for the prayers
