Should big blocks go in A bodys?

I’ve worked on cars tighter than this
Have you worked on any newer cars. Brutal

I always figured 9’s or slower small block. Mid 9’s and faster big block. Not that a small block can’t go faster than that but the cost goes up bigtime unless you cheat (lol) and use a power adder. Those small blocks sure make things easier to work on in an A body.

Maybe back in the day they wouldn't handle safely for the stereo but today there are so many choices for torsion bars, brakes, sway bars, rims/tires out there that it shouldn't be hard to get good handling from a big block abody. I can tell you for sure that there is just nothing left ke a big block abody. They are so much fun.

Big blocks are great. They aren’t that bad to work on in an A body, not much worse than a B or C body. No water in the intake, distributor and oil filter right in front, water pump easy to change. Plug access isnt as good as a 318 but it’s not that bad. Even a mild one is fun as hell to drive

I'm not arguing that a big block a body is awesome and has a potential to be very fast it better be it seems like it would be pretty embarrassing to get shut down by a small block. I love B and R Bs mainly just for the strength of the blocks

You were right to disagree with me. I looked it up. Big block 670. Small block 550. So I was wrong. It's not 150 pounds. It's 120. And that's the 440 weight. The low deck is 620.

I don't think it would be embarrassing at all. IF you have a mild 440 in a A-body that runs low 12's and somebody has a wild small block that runs 10's, you lose. Can't let pride stand in the way of owning/building what you want. I guarantee you there are plenty of stock 340's that would get beat by my 318. But what's that mean? Nothing, really

Right. Like my almost stock 400 goin in Vixen. I'm doin it cause I want to. I don't give a **** about what outruns it. It's something I want to do. I have no doubt with HP manifolds, the mild cam, the DP4B intake and "whatever carburetor I choose it'll have close to or right at 1 LB FT per cube. That's some fun stuff in a 2700 pound car with a manual transmission. FUN is what the hobby's all about. Some people forget that trying to fit everything into how they think it oughtta be. I say if somebody doesn't like what I'm doin, pound sand.

I'm excited (waiting patiently) for that combo to be together and on the road

For a good street car a 340 or 360 is more then enough
For a streeter, that would be a fairly accurate statement.
anything less than 10 pounds per cubic inch and 1 hp per cubic inch; is blowing the tires away anyhow, for most legal speed limits. That is to say; a well-spec'd 360hp in a 3600 pound car, is gonna spin any street tires that fit in the small factory tubs, to 60 mph at least, and in the bigger ones, to 50 at least.
Furthermore;in the zero to 60 contest, the best you can do is 2 gears, so what you might lack in brute force, can easily be made up for by gearing.
Furthermore; it doesn't take a lotta money to build a 360hp/360 cuber, or even a 340; the 340 will just have less bottom end torque, which is not a big deal, cuz the 360 annihilates tires anyway.

But the rest of post #1, is inciting to say the least. Ima thinking you got a bet going with one of your chevy buddies?

I forget who it was but we have a member who road races a big block A body and routinely kicks Viper and Porsche ***.
He ain’t been racin me.

Amen brother!

Obviously ( my handle ) I've had BB A-bodies and loved them. Recently I sold my 408 4-speed 70 Dart, with great regret now. The stroker dart was faster than the 440 but was much more expensive to make it so. (Like to buy my 408 back if you read this :).)

ok, go back to 1970, the 340 duster and 14 second 1/4 mile, just a tic quicker than a BB mopar!! been a big fan erry since! besides, i always root for the under dog!

Iv got nothing against a big block in an abody and if just by happens chance i had a big block an Abody at the same id sure do it. But i am a huge fan of small blocks.
