1972 Dodge Colt

I hear you Charrlie, I appreciate your experience.
Not a fan of too tight crank snout parts.

Engine apart yesterday.
Most of it looks real good.
Need to head to the machine shop to see what he thinks about the crank.
Then a new Damper solution, won't be using that ROMAC any more.

Here is a link to a video of current progress.

Going to take 3 cranks to the machine shop tomorrow to see which one they like.
I hope this will buff out.

Just kidding.
Going through my stash, not sure why I had this one, I didn't do that.
I did find 2 440 cranks, they are going on FB Market place to get some cash.

Yea, I can save the cam, but I don't want to reuse it.
I am going with at least a .550 and a little more duration.
And a little more compression, and a little more everything!
What's the specs on the one coming out?

The galled snout crank has the very large counterweight. 89 lbs.
The smaller counterweight is 76 lbs.
I use the smaller crank register so I have to use those cranks for now.
Sorry, I meant the camshaft with the broken dowel.

Oh, I missed that ESP message!
I dropped it at the machine shop and they are going to drill it out.
Here are the old and new cards.

Just back from the crank trip.
Current machine shop doesn't do cranks any more.
So into the belly of the beast, downtown Dallas and over to Fair Park.
Engine rebuild business.
I dropped both small cranks, if the second one doesn't clean up, they will have a present.
I asked about the pilot bushing, oh, we don't do that.
I asked about a woodruff key, missing on one crank, oh we don't have those.
I asked about the snout on big crank, WOW, that looks bad, we don't fix those.

Smaller race shop on the way home removed the booger on the inside of the ROMEC damper.
They are going to drill the cam dowel out.

Now to fit my honing plate to the block to get it honed next week.

You keep repeating small crank and big crank. So is this a cast crank engine?

Looks like you’re taking a pretty big jump up in cam duration.
254 > 272 @.050

No v/p clearance issues with that combo?

Forged.
The "BIG" crank was 92 lbs. on my scale.
The "Small" crank was 75 lbs.
Here are the center counterweight pictures.
When I was a kid decades ago, these were called Truck Cranks.
Here they are side by side, look at the center counterweight.

Yes, no room.
After I get the new crank and head, I will assemble and measure.
Flycut pistons are in the future.

I was skared before, not any more.

Ok, thanks. I leared-ded summfin new again. I knew there was a light and heave cast crank, but no idea there were two forged cranks.

Cleaning parts and getting parts together.
Crank shop called on the junk crank, won't clean at 30, but I guarantee that engine was running.
He says it can be welded, I will get with him Thursday and see "How Much$".

I took the rings off the pistons.
The second rings have a weird carbon smiley face at 180 degrees from each other.
The rest of the ring is shiny and clean.
Not sure what would have caused that.
But I have never disassembled an engine with these few miles.
Top rings are shiny all the way around.
Maybe it's normal?

With the mass on that early HD crank, if You drop the clutch at 6K, You should carry the front wheels 60ft.!!!!

No, that ain't normal,....

Picked up the cranks today.
They turned the bad crank 30 on number 6 rod surface.
It looked good on one side, not so good on the back side.

So since I ain't made of money, I just brought that one home.
( I know some of you readers think I am! LOL)
They wanted $50 to weld it up, not bad I thought, but don't need it right now.
The other crank looks great, I am excited to get started going back together.
I polished the snout, pressed in the pilot bearing in, and dressed some flash.

I have a damper being rebuilt and a set of lifters being reground now.

Getting stoked now.

You would think so.......but it didn't work that way.
Of course I didn't do a 6K drop.
Being the owner, mechanic, driver, old guy.....I either don't have the balls or nerve to do that.
