200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

-
So , what does this mod. cost complete after all is said and done ???
I bought mine from Art Carr. I got the transmission, torque converter, super servo, tv bracket and adapter plate including shipping for $3300. I got the mid range built transmission good up to 750 horsepower.
Additionally I had to buy some steel to make a crossmember and a few nuts and bolts. That was about all the extra expenses for the transmission.

Was the adapter plate already bolted to the trans. or put on in the install. ? I understood "clinteg" had to machine the bell housing off and fit it , or have it done.???????????
If I were to tackle it , I would probably rework the floor of mine too, along w/ building a crossmember .

Mine came with the TCI adapter. I huge square piece of billet that was drilled for all the proper holes, but not cut to shape. I mounted the motor and tranny on the floor, sprayed paint around it to give me the form and cut it down myself.

"So , what does this mod. cost complete after all is said and done ???"
I spent 750.00 for the Wilcap adapter with all fasteners, flexplate, and hub adapter. My trans came from an '86 Monte Carlo SS for $100.00. The Transgo shift kit was $190.00. The shift kit and other HD pieces were installed by the trans rebuilder, along with a 2800 stall converter he supplied. Total cost for the trans work was $1400.00.

I think I spent a total of $2000.00 on everything but I installed it myself. I cut the adapter plate myself. You're lucky that you found MC SS trans. The MC SS governor is the real find, I had to modify my governor and also replace the plastic speedo gear in the trans to get the dash speedo to read correctly. It's way cheaper than the Gearvendor and easier in my opinion. I paid less for my trans overhaul but it only had to take 400HP?? Treblig

I was lucky on the trans. A friend of mine from the race track had a bunch of Monte Carlos he used for race car sheet metal and was nice enough to let me have the trans cheap, and it was in great shape.

cool , thanks.

cuda620, the flex plate came with the Wilcap adapter. For the torque converter, I told my rebuilder to get me a non-lockup 2800 stall that would handle around 400 - 450 horsepower. He sourced it for me and had it when I picked up the trans.

I had the convertor builder add 3/8" to the three convertor mounting pads because the wilcap set up makes you have to pull the convertor too much towards the engine which doesn't give you as much pump engagement. With the extra 3/8" on the pads you get full engagement of the pump splines. Treblig

My flexplate came with the adapter as well. I originally went with a 10" non lock up 2700 stall converter as recommended by Art Carr. After having the transmission rebuilt a year or so ago, I called PTC and had them build a 3500 stall. The whole transmission works better now and I ran 3/10ths of a second faster.

what about the starter, looks like it would be too short, or did u guys use the chevy starter/yuck!

I used the mopar newer (90s) 5.2 starter (the small one), gives you clearance for the exhaust. I had to do a little extra trimming to get the starter nose to clear. It's all in my long post/thread when I built built and installed the 2004R. Treblig

Something we found out when I took the car to get the exhaust reconfigured was that my TTi X pipe would no longer work the way it was. They had to extend the exhaust 5 inches just after the collector to get the X pipe far enough back to clear the new transmission crossmember.

I use a high torque mini starter. I bought one online, and when it failed I found one fromn a Durango that fits perfectly. The nose cone just barely clears, but it stays stationary so it wasn't an issue. I got it from NAPA, part # 2446678.

In the transmission rebuild with converter and Reid bellhousing I have about $3300 -$3400 in mine. Minus $900 for selling the old trans and converter and I have about $2500 in it. That doesn’t include oil cooler, lines, shifter, reverse switch, driveshaft, etc.

Mine was cut off with a sawzall and grinder. It was not machined, but it looks like it was. Way too much trouble to get it tooled up to machine unless you send it to Lonnie.

Good info, thanks guys. Think I`m gonna stick w/ the 727 for now, just changed cams and whipped a cooling problem (I think), car is running better than ever so far. The 505 is as responsive as an old funny car doing dry hops ! LOVE IT !
ALL DONATIONS FOR GAS WILL BE APPRECIATED ! LOL

Anyone tried it on a 440? Will the 2004R hold up to one? Thanks
lol , one of EA stage three 2004R has been behind a 608 bbc 1170 hp to the wheels for 3.5 years now . And i assure you it gets the snot driven out of it. fluid is pink with no material and its super nice and smooth but get on it and it will snap your head back 1-2 2-3 shifts . im putting one behind my 340 based stroker .

also bought the usct crossmember , and im definitely cutting out the crossmember arch . I notched it for an sst a41 (4l60e) and that tdamn thing banged and hit the crossmember all the damn time. it was annoying as hell . I no longer have torsion bars either .

Looks like a lot of work.
Was there a specific reason you had for using the GM trans over a bolt in Chrysler model?
Just curious.
...I read the entire thread looking for the answer. Didn't find it but now I have bigger problems; trying to get my head to stop shaking back and forth.

And you probably won't find the answer your looking for. Most wont answer that question for fear of being burned at the stake by the good ol boys. Anytime anything is mentioned about a gm tranny, ford 9” etc etc. it ususlly becomes a “ well the dana 60 is stronger” or “the 46rh is just as strong i put down 3000 hp in my daily driver all day for twenty years and never even changed the fluid and wheelie all the way to and from work “

Which may well be the case and im not sayin a word for or against that. Me personally , im putting a 2004r behind a smallblock and for the strength to cost ratio ill take it.

Example :
I also have a t-56 behind a big hemi backed by a 9” that i catch rations of **** for. And sure the dana is stronger , it also weighs three times what the 9” weighs. But the main reasons are

1 : found a housing in the junkyard for 100 bucks. Cost and availabilty of the chunk is pretty damned good.

2: the main reason is that i have a 4 link ( gerst) and i want to have tail pipes. And yes i know anything can be fabbed. But man try fabbing 3” tailpipes with a dana and four link.

I realize there are some that do their own work. And some that throw their checkbook at their car. But for me i think the tranny crossmember is a pretty damned easy mod. If you have basic welding skills and a 150 dollar harbor freight mig you can get it done in an afternoon. No bfh tunnel mods , parts are available anywhere. Etc. and no matter your brand loyalty or weather ya like it or not the 2004r is a bmf and comes in a reasonably compact case. 2004R also has a race proven record so why not.

I’m goin with a 451 from EM with their bell for the same reasons. Plus it affords better driveability. I don’t wanna destroy my new looking floorboards in my 67 A body.

I can see the nine; cheaper and stronger than the 8 3/4. But the gm trans is extremely more expensive than the dodge and the floor doesn't need cut, just the brace; correct? Driveability? How different are the ratios?

correct , you remove the center section of your T bar crossmember. and weld in the usct member . the rest is bolt in . mine is 2:74, 1:57, 1:1,.067. you can opt for 2.57/1.57/1.00/.67 if you like . As with any GM stuff countless trick aftermarket billet this or that is readily available just because of the chevo popularity . yup my tranny was expensive . i have EA strongest build available.

Stage 3 2004r built to hold over 1K hp
Billet converter
Deep pan ,
Converter pilot bushing for sbm
machine work to install the bell adapter
EA Designed transbrake,
Reid SFI Bell.
SFI Flexplate
and shipping ended up to $6175 and some change . i have a tranny that i can buy a 400 dollar bell and 8 bolt flexplate for and put behind a gen 2 hemi, rb . or a different bell and put behind a hellcrate .
and EA offers to the original purchaser 450 dollar life time freshen up .
now with that being said.I have bought in the past five years .

2 Cummins trannies for the same truck both were supposed to be aftermarket ( not gona mention the brand) overbuilt and also very pricey . both took a dump and never towed anything heavier than a duster shell on a flatbed .

for the dart three 727's one from 727 specialist and two from hughes which i really liked and nothing wrong with the tranny just did three different engine combos at 1800 ea

so i paid a little more up front but i have a damn good tranny that i can throw the kitchen sink at .and if it makes the purists feel any better see the copy and paste below from the EA website . yes there is actually a Mopar part in the 2004r!!!!
