Very true. Unfortunately things that many of us did in our youth that worked has been demonized in the days of the internet and yes some for all the right reasons.

Today they do make a fuss about taper and it killing the rings however this is illustration I think is also from Hastings and shows the ever changing gap with the increased taper. Say in maybe 86 I had an SD455 with .011 taper and the shop owner was a friend and fellow tractor puller and it was briefly mentioned and then we moved on. I ended up getting another 60k miles of hard street beating and weekend brackets and never had an oil issue. And yes, this re rung, high taper SD455 would do a number on my stock well running 70 440-6 Runner and a friends GS 455-1 and with a 3.42 gear would easily handle the 5.0 and GN-s light to light and on the interstate. Honestly them times were seemingly much more fun as we were all the captain of our own ship and not internet servants.

Those were the days of pre internet where if it ran when coming apart it ran with rings and bearings, cam ect.

I would not toss your stuff in the dumpster but rather maximize what you have and go have fun.

Yaay! A 'good to go, run it' hotrodder. I'd bet you have even had a few pistons knurled, too! Does anyone still do that? Last one I did was 4 cylinder Chris-Craft Marine(Hercules IXB)
 
Yes, that was a tale-tail sign, the grinding. Lucky he only went a have block before coming back to the shop, saying the brakes didn't feel right. I have him remove the front tires (yes, both) and tell me what he sees. He said everything was done right. I had to point out the problem for him. He blamed it on Chrysler, for making the pads flat on both sides.
I bought a motorcycle that had two different fluids in the front line. They didn't mix at all. Redid that and motored on. Blamed Chrysler that's pretty funny!
 

Actually no knurling on that deal. I think I recall 3 new pistons though due to something not being right on a few top end interstate runs when letting off and seeing the lil white sparks from the tail pipes.

Funny though as I do have a old knurling machine that I use when doing some vintage tractor work. Wont even mention the valve guide knurler, might cause too much excitement.

I must ask... I see this egge deal with 273-s often. What gives?

Their pistons (I bought the HP's) were perfect both size and weight. My machine shop had heard of the brand but had never seen them in person. He was impressed with the quality.

Apparently Egge lost the casting for the left side pistons. They are talking months and probably double the price as advertised before they can even entertain making a new set of the high compression pistons......

I called rebuilder's choice as suggested above. They have them in stock but have know idea as to the origin of the piston manufacturer. They want $75.00 a piston which is cheaper then egge.

I have seen photos of the Builders Choice. They look good. They might be Badger.

You might really luck out and get an old, forged set. :thumbsup:
 
Kanter sells nice 273 4 bbl pistons. A friend used them and he said they were a lot nicer than the Egge's. he said they had a slightly taller dome and the skirts were coated.. They are kind of hard to find on the Kanter website, I'll see if I can find them.
 
Kanter part numbers are PST2222A020 for .020 over and so on they have rings also. They have .020, .030, .040, and .060 and standard. Don't know where they come from. Phone is 800-526-1096.

Isn't it Kanter that specialize in rubber supplies? I've been out of the loop for awhile.
