318 combo's

15.9 is a really respectable time for a 100% stock 2bbl 318/trans/gears in a 65 belvedere.

Here's mine, was originally built nearly 20 years ago, only recently got it running again:

318 block + 0.040", stock crank
Stock replacement pistons
318 heads plus 360 valves and some mild port work allegedly
stock pressed steel rocker gear
MP windage tray
Old Weiand high rise dual plain manifold, spread bore pattern
650 DP Holley (spread bore)
Home built shorty headers into dual 2.5" exhaust
Aussie Borg Warner 4 speed manual
4.44 gears 25.5" tyres

14.2 seconds @ 100.8 mph

The trick is 2900 lbs with the driver installed. Really needs some taller gears because it's running out of revs well before the end of the track.

I am building a 318 for my truck out of spare parts (and a few new ones) but not sure what to expect for horses or compression.

318 +.030
360 heads 155/190
340 intake w/ Holley 650 up top
Hydraulic Cam and lifter 278/288 .421/.444
bolted to a stock 727

might try taller tires before taller gears.. see if you can borrow some 28 to 30's from a friend

Heres mine:

'71 318 block .030" over and decked for 9.5:1 comp.
stock crank
stock floating rods w/ ARP bolts
federal mougul cast pistons w/ valve reliefs
Melling HV oil pump and stock 340 windage tray
MP .474 purple shaft cam
double roller timing chain
stock #302 casting heads with 340 springs
Edelbrock performer intake w/ 600 cfm edelbrock carb.

That's an almost exact clone of my 318 (that I still don't have a car for) except I have the 284/484 purple cam and I have a LD4B intake. What gears are you using and with what stall, and what do you think of it?

Where are all the 318 STROKERS???? That's my next build...360 heads with 200R4. Street machine no drag racing.

I have a 318 piston to valve clearance question.

I added 308 cast heads with 1.88" intake valves that were also decked about 0.040" in an effort to raise CR......to my 72 cuda with factory original shortblock. When I added the heads, I measued pistons about 0.085" in the bore at TDC. I also added a comp cam with 0.477/0.480" lift, and I was told that I should be fine with P2V, and about 3K miles later, seems to be the case.

Anybody have a good idea how far up in the bore I can come before P2V becomes an issue, with that same cam? I am considering a new flat top that will be 0.030" in the bore. I will fully check once tore down, but just planning ahead.

Thanks

Yeah where are those strokers at I'm think of building a 390 stroker out of a 72 318 for my 67 Barracuda I would like to get some ideas

Here's my build.
94 Magnum 5.2, factory pistons and rods. 8.86 cr. Template ported magnum heads with 1.97 int 1.62 exh. 241 cfm @ .550 lift flowed at 28", Scorpion 1.72 roller rockers, Krc roller 210/220 @ .050 .538 lift at the valve, 114 lsa,(blower grind), Hughes engines springs and retainers, M1 efi ported intake manifold with 52mm throttle body, Hooker super comp 1-5/8 longtubes with dual 3" exh with x-pipe, walker race bullet and magnaflow mufflers, 8-1/4 axle with 4.10 gears, 2400 stall, 3800 lbs w/driver. Dynoed 290 rwhp. Ran a best of 13.27 @ 102.88 shifting at 6200 rpm. I can only imagine how this would run in my 1970 Dart.:burnout:

Thanks Needsaresto. Im finely starting my 68 barracuda 318 build.
I just droped off my heads and block to the machine shop. I am having my 340X heads done new guides adjustable rockers larger combustion chamber at 68 cc different valve grinding. heavier springs port and polished lots of work on the intake side.
The block will be bored 60 over.I am purchasing a compleat balanced, forged rotating stroker kit from RPM Machine. in Utah. rated up to 600 hp. along with the new holly EFI programmable fuelinjection. the machine shop built this motor last year for an other customer. it puled 465 hp. I don't have all the component specs yet. I should by tomorrow. My project is a restomodd. or a SMC super muscle Car.

76 318 la stock bore. magnum heads (cleaned up casting and ports) comp 260h. 600eddy. Cheap airgap. Weiand la covers - (no leaks) running good now found out what the random lifter noise was with the magnum head swap. Need headers and exhaust done now

Guys,
I really have not read through all the pages of this thread, BUT, I have a question that was asked to me over the phone, and I simply could not answer it, truthfully.

Building a 318.....was there EVER a 318 dual carb intake? like a 2x4 set up? I know this is a novice question, but my Step-Son asked me if I knew of anything like that, and sadly, I don't (I'm not familiar with what was offered for a LA 318, as far as after-market parts are concerned, I seriously doubt anything like that was EVER made by Ma Mopar..... Which, I relayed to him. As one of his friends, had a Dart (I'm unsure of the year of the car or the fact that I have ever seen this car) I'm not sure of what has been done to the car, if anything, but he's looking to do a little, Nothing serious as far as boring, and or stroking goes but.....bolt on simple things (HELL, I'm not sure if it has headers at this point or manifolds) BUT, see, I'm trying to see if I can give him ideas to help his friend out a bit. I may possibly see his friend today (Sunday) so.....doubtful I'll have any info by then! BUT a phone call is all that would take!

EDIT:
Did a bit of research and come up with Offenhauser to make a dual quad intake for a 318.. problem being, I'm not sure if they are talking about the 318 A Poly motor, OR a LA 318... The price is a bit steep but, then again, it is a rare part I suppose. Anyone know for sure? I know a dual quad intake was made for the 318 Poly, but I'm not sure of a LA 318.....
